HWL Overdrive Episode #19 (11/06/19)

Pyros light up the HWL Arena in St. Louis as we bring to you another episode of HWL Overdrive. Tonight, the Road to Starrcade Tournaments obviously continue and as a bonus, we have a tag team championship match as The Suicicdes put the titles on the line against Enzo & Cass.

Starting things off, we have the cruiserweights as Bandido and Rich Swann make their way to the ring.

Match #1 – Road to Starrcade Cruiserweight Tournament – Bandido vs. Rich Swann
The two men square off as the match gets under way and Swann goes for a Running Enziguri, but Bandido sidesteps and catches his leg and drops him to the mat. Bandido then steps into an STF Submission and forces Swann to tap out.

Bandido starts us off with a victory in rapid fashion as he moves on to the semifinals of the cruiserweight #1 contender’s tournament. With that match being over so quickly, we’re going to take your right to our next match and the Cruiserweight champion Austin Aries is looking to make his mark in the heavyweight division as well as he makes his way to the ring to take on Braun Strowman in this next match.

Match #2 – Road to Starrcade Heavyweight Tournament – Austin Aries vs. Braun Strowman

Aries drops out to the floor as the match gets under way and Aries paces around the outside of the ring, but Strowman rolls out to the floor in front of him to block his path. Aries then reverses course and takes off running around the ring with Stromwan in pursuit.  Aries tries to dive back into the ring, but Strowman catches him by the boot and pulls him back to the floor. Strowman then drops a big elbow into Aries back and then drags him back up and hoists him onto a shoulder like for a Running Power Slam, but instead of going for the slam tries to ram Aries head first into the ring post, but Aries slips free down the back and shoves Strowman head first into the ring post and a big gash is opened up on Strowman’s forehead. Aries then retreats into the ring and Stromwan rolls in after him, but the referee jumps in to try to check on Strowman’s cut. Aries then uses the referee’s focus on that to club the big man in the nuts and roll him up, using his tights for extra leverage unnoticed by the referee as he makes the three count.

Aries steals the win and goes on into the quarterfinals where it looks like he will be pulling double duty at Golden Ticket this Sunday with a cruiserweight title match and a quarterfinal match in the Road to Starrcade Tournament. Our cameras now take us to the back where there is a commotion with So Cal Uncensored’s Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian both down after an apparent attack and Kazarian is bleeding profusely from the top of his head. Medics are checking on them both and their partner, Scorpio Sky arrives on the scene, trying to figure out what happened. There are no answers for him though as both of his partners are loaded up onto stretchers and taken out of the arena in an ambulance as we go to commercial break.

Back from the break, the show must go on as Billie Kaye and Jessica Havok make their entrances for this next match, a quarterfinal matchup in the women’s Road to Starrcade Tournament.

Match #3 – Road to Starrcade Women’s Tournament – Billie Kaye vs. Jessica Havok

The two women square off in the ring and Billie takes a page out of Aries book as she immediately rolls out to the floor and Havok goes out after her and catches Billie by the back of the tights and swings her bodily into the barricade. The referee admonishes Havok to get it back in the ring and Havok snarls at the referee and backs him down. Billie, meanwhile, reaches over the barricade and takes a chair away from a fan. Billie then charges Havok with the chair, but Havok catches her coming with a Thrust Kick to the gut.  Havok then takes the chair and smashes Billie across the back with it, dropping her lack a sack of potatoes and the referee calls for the bell.

Billie Kaye is your winner by disqualification and Havok is nonplussed as she didn’t bring the chair into play. Unable to sway the referee, Havok instead settles for smashing Billie with the chair a few more times before throwing down the chair in disgust and storming off up the rampway as we take you to a word from our sponsors.

Back from the break, Scorpio Sky makes his way to the ring and it seems like he’s going to have to go it alone for this match with the Undisputed Era as Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly make their way to the ring.

Match #4 – Road to Starrcade Tag Team Tournament – Undisputed Era vs. So Cal Uncensored

Fish starts things off with Sky and Scorpio sends him reeling with a series of big right hands. Sky then whips Fish off into the ropes and knocks him flat with a Discus Clothesline. O’Reilly then charges in and Sky hits him with a Dropkick, knocking O’Reilly down and sending him rolling out to the floor. Sky then whips Fish into the corner and follows him in with a Flying Lariat. Sky then tries to follow up with a Running Bulldog, but O’Reilly reaches in from the floor and trips Sky. Fish then nails Sky with a Running Knee Smash to the side of the head and follows up with a Brainbuster.  Fish then tags out to O’Reilly and then drags Sky back up into a Powerbomb as O’Reilly comes in off the top rope with a Diving Knee Drop across Sky’s chest.  Fish and O’Reilly then let Sky stumble back up to his feet in the middle of the ring and they bounce off the ropes on opposite sides to meet in the middle with a Running High-Low Chop Block and Spinning Heel Kick combination and O’Reilly covers Sky for the three count.

The Undisputed Era are moving on. In the back we see Enzo and Cass making preparations for their tag team title match later tonight. Up in the rafters, we see the Suicides looking down from above, watching the ring from their perch, waiting for their time to go on as we take you to another word from our sponsors.

Back from the break, another heavyweight Road to Starrcade Tournament match is due up as Sting and Kevin Owens make their way to the ring.

Match #5 – Road to Starrcade Heavyweight Tournament – Kevin Owens vs. Sting

The two men square off and Owens nails Sting with some clubbing blows, but Sting drives his knee into Owens’ gut.  Sting then takes Owens and tries to drive him face first into the corner, but Owens blocks it. Owens then slams Sting face first into the corner and then Clotheslines him out over the top rope and out to the ring apron. Owens then pummels Sting and tries to Suplex him back into the ring, but Sting blocks it and knocks Owens flat with a Headbutt. Sting heads up to the top turnbuckle and goes for a Big Splash down onto Owens, but Owens rolls out of the way and Sting crashes to the mat.  Owens lets Sting drag himself back up and then kicks him in the gut and connects with a Stunner and Sting flops backward into the ropes, but stays on his feet as he stumbles forward into a Pop-up Powerbomb and Owens makes the cover for the three count.

Owens advances to the quarterfinal round. A highlight video then updates the audience on the Suicide invasion of the HWL. The tag team title match is coming up next after this word from our sponsors.

Back from the break, the titles are on the line as Enzo & Cass and The Suicides make their entrances.

Match #6 – HWL Tag Team Championship – The Suicides vs. Enzo & Cass

Suicide and Enzo start things off and Suicide goes to a Side Headlock on Enzo and the little twerp starts screaming he wasn’t ready and manages to force a break by tying himself up in the ropes. Enzo then quickly tags out to Cass and Cass comes in and goes to a Side Headlock on Suicide and Enzo is screaming now, ‘How do you like it,’ and Suicide seems to like it just fine as he shoves Cass off into the ropes and hits the big man with a Dropkick, knocking him through the ropes and out to the ring apron. Suicide then connects with an Enziguri and makes the tag to the other Suicide, who comes off the middle rope from outside the ring to connect with a Blockbuster Flying Neckbreaker on Cass on the ring apron and the big man drops to the floor like a rock. Suicide slowly drags Cass up by the tights and puts him back in the ring and then makes the tag to the other Suicide. Enzo comes in to try to break things up and runs into a Double Superkick from the Suicides. One Suicide then hoists Enzo up onto his shoulders as the other heads up to the top turnbuckle and hits a modified Doomsday Device, but with a Spinning Heel Kick instead of a Flying Clothesline. The Suicides then bounce off the ropes on opposite sides of the ring and crash into Cass with Running Knee Smashes at the same time to both temples. One Suicide then clears Enzo out of the ring as the other goes up to the top rope and hits Cass with a 450 Splash and covers him for the three count.

The Suicides retain the Tag Team titles and roll on to defend against the Briscoes this Sunday at Golden Ticket. It remains that nobody can hang with the mysterious masked men. We are now going to take one final commercial break. When we come back, our Main Event tonight is the final first round match in the heavyweight Road to Starrcade Tournament. Stay tuned.

Back from the break, it’s Main Event time as TJ Perkins and Adam Cole make their entrances for this Main Event match.

Match #7 – Road to Starrcade Heavyweight Tournament – Adam Cole vs. TJ Perkins

Cole and Perkins square off as the match gets under way and they engage in a Greco-Roman Knucklelock and Perkins rolls over onto his back, driving his feet into Cole’s thighs and tries to flip him through the air, but Cole drops his center of gravity and is able to stay on his feet and then stomps on Perkins’ gut.  Cole then spins Perkins around while keeping the Knucklelock applied and then takes him down in a Straight Jacket Lungblower. Cole quickly goes for the cover, but Perkins kicks out. Cole puts the boots to Perkins and then drags him back up and pitches him out over the top rope, but Perkins hangs on and lands on the ring apron. Cole charges over and Perkins drives his shoulder through the ropes into Cole’s gut. Perkins then jumps in over the top rope and hits Cole with a Guillotine Leg Drop to the back of the head, driving him face first into the mat. Perkins then follows up with a Running Dropkick to the side of the head and then locks in a Knee Bar, but Cole quickly ties himself up in the ropes in desperation. Perkins then drags Cole up and tries to set up for a Detonation Kick, but Cole fights him off with a series of Elbow Strikes to the side of the head. Cole then follows up with a Yurinagi Backbreaker into an STO Takedown and makes the cover, but Perkins kicks out for a near fall. Cole pummels Perkins and then drags him up by the hair and goes for a Brainbuster, but Perkins twists out of it and comes down on his feet behind Cole. Perkins runs Cole into the ropes and rolls him up, but Cole kicks out. Perkins then lands a Superkick and springboards off the middle rope into a Tornado DDT. Perkins then dives into the cover, but Cole shoots his shoulder up at the last second.  Perkins then heads up to the top turnbuckle and Cole drags himself back up and takes a swing at Perkins’ legs, but Perkins jumps over the swing and lands back on his feet on the top turnbuckle, showcasing excellent agility and then dives onto Cole with a Flying Hurricanrana, launching Cole to the middle of the ring. Cole slowly gets up to his knees and Perkins goes for a Running Knee Smash to the face, but Cole drops down out of the way and counters in to a Drop Toehold. The two men get back to their feet and Perkins takes a swing, but Cole ducks it and counters into an Atomic Drop. Cole then follows up with a Brainbuster across the knee and then heads up to the top rope as Perkins stumbles back up to his feet and Cole dives down onto Perkins and into the Panama Sunrise. Cole finishes the job with the Last Shot and picks up the three count.

Adam Cole is the final wrestler advancing to the quarterfinals of the heavyweight Road to Starrcade Tournament as he turns back the challenge from TJ Perkins tonight. Who will move on into the semifinals? And who will carry the championships into Starrcade? Find out this Sunday when HWL comes to you live on Pay Per View. See you then. Until next week, we are signing off. Good night.
