HWL Overdrive Episode #10 (09/04/19)

Pyros light up the HWL Arena in St. Louis as we kick off this week’s edition of Overdrive. We are starting things off tonight with the Tag Team Championship on the line as the Undisputed Era and The Goodbrothers make their way to the ring. Undisputed Era earned this title match last week by defeating the Forgotten Sons and the Authors of Pain.

Match #1 – HWL Tag Team Championship – The Goodbrothers vs. Undisputed Era

Karl Anderson and Kyle O’Reilly start things off and O’Reilly lands a series of kicks to the hip and thigh and then goes for a Roundhouse Kick, but Anderson ducks out of the way and connects with a Reverse DDT style Backbreaker. Anderson quickly goes for the cover, but O’Reilly kicks out. Anderson puts the boots to O’Reilly and then bounces off the ropes and goes for a Running Knee Lift as O’Reilly regain his feet, but O’Reilly blocks it and takes Anderson down with a Dragon Screw. O’Reilly then pummels Anderson with a series of Forearm Shivers and then drags him over to his corner and makes the tag to Fish. Fish and O’Reilly then both put the boots to Anderson and drag him back to his feet and into a Double Suplex. Fish then hits Anderson with a quick series of Elbow Drops and makes the cover, but Anderson counters into a Crucifix rollup and gets a near fall. Fish then tries to grab Anderson in a Headlock, but Anderson fires back with punches to the gut and then a Jawbreaker and makes the tag to Gallows, who charges in and nails Fish with a Big Boot. Gallows then bounces off the ropes and goes for an Atomic Leg Drop, but Fish rolls out of the way and Gallows crashes to the mat. Fish then connects with a Dropkick to the point of the chin and makes the cover, but Gallows kicks out with authority, launching Gargano out between the bottom and middle ropes and out to the floor. Gallows rolls out after Fish and goes for a Discus Clothesline, but Fish ducks out of the way and Gallows drives his own forearm into the ring post. Fish then hits Gallows with an Enziguri and grabs him by the wrist and slams his forearm into the ring post again before rolling him back into the ring. Fish heads up to the top turnbuckle, but Anderson comes along and crotches him on the top rope. O’Reilly now charges around the ring and pulls Anderson off the ring post and Belly-to-Belly Suplexes him into the barricade. Gallows climbs up to the middle turnbuckle and tries to set up for a Ragdoll Slam on Fish, but O’Reilly comes in behind him with some Forearm Shivers to the kidneys. O’Reilly then Powerbombs Gallows off the middle rope as Fish dives over Gallows into a Neckbreaker on the way down. Fish then makes the cover, but Anderson pulls out the referee to save the match. O’Reilly now comes out after Anderson, but Anderson catches him by the tights on his way down from the ring apron and slings him into the barricade. Anderson then puts the boots to O’Reilly and presses his boot down across O’Reilly’s throat until Fish comes diving out to the floor and breaks it up with a Suicide Dive. Fish then drives Anderson down onto the point of the ring steps with a Tilt-a-Whirl Bodyslam. Fish and O’Reilly both go into the ring together and Gallows boots O’Reilly in the side of the head, knocking him backward into the corner and Fish jumps on Gallows back in a Sleeper Hold. O’Reilly comes back at Gallows with a series of kicks and then lands one to the knee, chopping the bigger man down. Fish then lets Gallows go and he and O’Reilly go to bounce off the ropes on opposite sides of the ring for a double team maneuver, but Anderson pulls down the top rope behind Fish, spilling him out to the floor and O’Reilly drills Gallows with a Running Knee Smash to the face. O’Reilly then dives through the ropes, Spearing Anderson off the ring apron and out to the floor and all four men are down. Fish is the first one back up to his feet and he punts Anderson in the side of the head as he tries to get back up. Gallows now back up in the ring reaches out over the top rope and grabs Fish by the hair and pulls him up onto the ring apron and Fish Headbutts him in the nose. Fish then climbs up to the middle turnbuckle from outside the ring and springboards up to the top rope in the corner and takes flight with a Moonsault, kneeing Gallows in the head on the way down. Fish then makes the tag to O’Reilly and Undisputed Era connects with tandem Running Knee Strikes to both sides of the head. Fish then tackles Anderson trying to come back in as O’Reilly covers Gallows and picks up the three count.

Fish and O’Reilly celebrate their victory as they are declared the winners and NEW HWL Tag Team Champions. However, the referee can’t seem to find the title belts. Then, up in the rafters we see that Suicide has somehow managed to steal away the championship belts and stands up high above the ring with one slung over each shoulder as he waves down to an irate Fish & O’Reilly. Suicide then steps away into the shadows and our cameras loose sight of him. Back in the ring, Fish and O’Reilly vow vengeance as we cut to commercial break.

Back from the break, we have more tag team action for you in this special challenge match after the events of last week’s Cruiserweight Championship match and TJ Perkins and Austin Aries, Drake Maverick and R-Truth each make their way to the ring.

Match #2 – Austin Aries & TJ Perkins vs. Drake Maverick & R-Truth

Perkins starts things out for his team, but instead of going out to the ring apron, Truth rolls up his own tag team partner and then is confused when the referee won’t count. Truth then scratches his head and turns around in time to get Clotheslined out over the top rope by Perkins and the bell sounds to start the match with Perkins and Maverick as the legal men. Maverick then rolls Perkins up off the distraction, but Perkins kicks out for a near fall. Perkins then kicks Maverick in the gut and delivers a Snap Suplex. TJP  then springboards off the middle rope into a Guillotine Leg Drop. Perkins goes for the cover, but Truth pulls him out to the floor by the boot and throws him into the ring steps. Truth then slides in and covers Maverick, who instinctively kicks out.  Aries now comes in and clubs Truth several times over the back of the neck and then delivers a Brainbuster. Maverick spins Aries around and knocks him flat with a Headbutt to the jaw. Maverick then heads up to the top rope and goes for a Diving Headbutt, but Aries rolls out of the way and Maverick crashes to the mat. Perkins slides in and hooks Maverick by the arm and rolls him up into a Magistral Cradle, but Truth dives over and breaks it up. Truth then ducks a big right hand from Aries and kicks him in the gut. Truth then follows up with a Scissors Kick and Aries rolls out under the bottom rope to the ring apron. Truth then throws a Superkick at Maverick, but Maverick ducks and Truth nails Perkins. Maverick then dives into the cover on Perkins, but he kicks out for a near fall. Truth now tries again to roll up Maverick, but Maverick kicks out and gives Truth a shove and the referee tries to separate the two partners, giving Aries the chance to take Truth out with a Low Blow behind the referee’s back and chuck him through the ropes and out to the floor. Perkins then hits Maverick with a Spinning Elbow to the side of the head and follows up with the Detonation Kick. Aries then tags himself in and comes off the top rope, landing on Maverick with a Corkscrew Senton and makes the cover for the three count.

Aries and Perkins pick up the victory and Aries goes over and collects the Cruiserweight Championship and spits in Maverick’s face. Aries then tells TJP to go get a chair. Perkins starts to slide in with the chair and Truth tries to stop him and so TJP blasts Truth over the head with it. Perkins then slide the chair in to Aries and Aries places it around Maverick’s neck and puts his weight on one of the legs, pinching it shut around Maverick’s throat as Maverick squirms around in desperation. The lights then go out in the arena and when they come back on, Suicide is standing there with the Tag Team Championships, which he drops to the mat and promptly lands a kick through the uprights into Aries’ groin and Aries drops like a sack of potatoes, releasing Maverick, who quickly snatches up his title and flees the ring. TJP now comes in with another chair and swings it, but Suicide ducks out of the way and picks up one of the tag team title belts and smashes Perkins in the face with it. Adam Cole, Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly now come charging down to the ring with the Goodbrothers right behind them and then Sami Callihan and the rest of OvE right behind them and the three teams are squabbling with each other trying to get at Suicide, all wanting their revenge. While Suicide is distracted by the chaos, Perkins is able to regroup and jumps on Suicide from behind and starts pulling on his mask. The lights then go out again and when they come back on, Suicide is gone, but Perkins has his mask gripped in his fist as chaos continues to run rampant at ringside with OvE, the Goodbrothers and Undisputed Era brawling with each other and we cut to commercial break.

Back from the break, our security team has gotten things back under control and it’s time for our Main Event. The winner of this Triple Threat Match is going to go on to challenge Samoa Joe for the World Heavyweight Championship next week, right here on Overdrive, and the potential contenders, Elias, Brian Cage and Kevin Owens each make their way to the ring.

Match #3 – Triple Threat #1 Contender’s Match – Kevin Owens vs. Brian Cage vs. Elias

The three men circle each other as the match gets under way and Elias and Owens opt to rush Cage together and Cage knocks them both flat with a Double Clothesline. Cage then bounces off the ropes and hits a Big Splash on Owens, hooking the leg for the cover, but Owens kicks out. Cage then hits Elias with a series of big right hands, driving him back against the ropes. Cage then whips Elias across the ring and drives him into the mat with a thunderous Double-A Spinebuster. Owens takes Cage down with a Chop Block to the back of the knee and then starts working over his leg until Elias can regroup and lay in some kicks to the back of Cage’s head. Owens and Elias then try to set up for a Double DDT on Cage, but Cage powers out into a Back Body Drop on both men. Owens then stumbles up against the ropes and Cage Clotheslines him out over the top rope and out to the floor. Cage then levels Elias with a Discus Clothesline and Owens pulls Cage out to the floor and tackles him spine first into the ring post. Owens then kicks Cage in the gut and connects with the Stunner out on the floor. Owens rolls back into the ring and Elias kicks him in the gut and connects with an Impaler DDT and makes the cover, but Owens kicks out. Elias pummels Owens and then bounces off the ropes and goes for a Leaping Knee Drop, but Owens rolls out of the way and Elias crashes to the mat. Owens then kicks Elias in the gut and connects with the Stunner and Elias flops out through the ropes and drops all the way out to the floor. Owens goes out after Elias and drags him up by the hair and tries to throw him back in the ring, but Elias is pretty much dead weight and his left arm gets hooked over the bottom rope, blocking Owens from sliding him in on his stomach. Instead, Owens pulls Elias back to the floor and hits him with the Stunner again and now Cage comes charging around the corner and nearly Spears Owens out of his shoes. Cage then puts Owens up in a Gorilla Press and tosses him a couple of rows deep into the crowd. Cage then drags Elias up by the hair and slams his head into the ring apron a couple of times and puts him back in the ring, leaving his head hanging out over the edge of the ring apron as he climbs up and delivers an Undertaker-style Leg Drop on the ring apron. Cage shoves Elias back into the ring and then heads up to the top turnbuckle and connects with a Diving Senton down across Elias’ back. Cage then climbs out onto the ring apron as he sees Owens climbing back over the barricade and Cage dives off the ring apron, connecting with a Diving Shoulder Block that sends both men crashing through the barricade. Cage emerges from the wreckage and slides back into the ring as Elias is stumbling back up to his feet. Cage hoists him up onto one shoulder for a Running Powerslam, but Elias rakes his eyes and slips free down the back.  Elias then goes for the Drift Away, but Cage counters into a Short-arm Clothesline and holds onto Elias’ wrist to keep him from going down as he Clotheslines him two more times and then connects with the Drill Claw in the middle of the ring and makes the cover for the three count.

Watch out Samoa Joe because Brian Cage is coming next week for a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship. That huge clash between two of the biggest, toughest men on the roster can only be brought to you here in the HWL and you can see it live next week on Overdrive. Thanks for joining us tonight. We’ll see you next week, but for now we’re signing off.
