Overdrive Episode #20 (11/13/19)

Pyros light up the HWL Arena in St. Louis as we kick off this week’s edition of Overdrive and we’re kicking things off right away with The B Team standing by in the ring as War Machine their way to the ring.

Match #1 – Road to Starrcade Tag Team Tournament – War Machine vs. The B Team

Ray Rowe and Bo Dallas start things off and Rowe lands an almost instant knockout with a Leaping Knee Smash. Rowe then makes a move like he’s going to lunge at Curtis Axel on the ring apron and Axel flinches and falls off the ring apron to the floor.  Rowe then tags in Hanson, who comes off the top rope with a Senton Splash on Dallas and covers him for the three count.

Call them what you want - War Machine, War Raiders, Viking Raiders, Hanson and Rowe, Erik and Ivar – just make sure you call them winners tonight as they make short work of The B Team and advance in the Road to Starrcade Tournament. As War Machine makes their way to the back, Bobby Fish of the Undisputed Era is making his way out to the ring, creating a tense moment as the three men pass each other, but Hanson and Rowe allow Fish to pass without incident as they head to the back. Drake Maverick then makes his way out to the ring and we’ve got a cruiserweight tournament match coming up next.

Match #2 – Road to Starrcade Cruiserweight Tournament – Bobby Fish vs. Drake Maverick

Fish and Maverick tie up as the match gets under way and there is apparently some miscommunication in the back as War Machine’s music hits again, prompting Fish to nervously spin around looking for them as Maverick rolls him up from behind for the three count.

Maverick scrambles out to the floor and celebrates his victory as he knocks off Bobby Fish, who stomps around the ring in a fury. We’ll get this sorted out over this commercial break and have more action for you when we come back.

Back from the break, it’s time for our first of three title matches tonight as Jessamyn Duke, Paige, Madison Rayne and Nikki Cross make their entrances for this Fatal 4-Way match.

Match #3 – HWL Women’s World Championship – Fatal 4-Way – Nikki Cross vs. Jessamyn Duke vs. Madison Rayne vs. Paige

The four women square off as the match gets under way and Paige squares off with Duke and knocks her flat with a Headbutt in the middle of the ring. Rayne then tries to roll Paige up from behind, but Paige kicks out for a near fall. Cross hits Rayne with a Running Knee Lift and then an Impaler DDT.  Paige connects with a German Suplex on Cross and bridges up into the cover for a near fall. Paige whips Cross into the corner and then drags Duke up and whips her in after Cross, but Cross drives both boots up into Duke’s face. Paige then pulls Rayne up and sends her in after Cross and Cross drives both boots up into her face as well and while Duke went down, Rayne instead stumbles back to the middle of the ring and Paige hits her with the Rampaige and Rayne rolls out to the floor. Cross then drags Duke up by the hair and connects with a Fisherman’s Neckbreaker. Paige and Cross then trade punches back and forth and Paige goes for a Headbutt, but Cross matrixes out of the way and then takes Paige by the tights and spins her around in a circle twice before pitching her through the ropes in the corner and head first into the ring post and Paige drops out to the ring apron and then to the floor. Cross then drags Duke back up and hits her with Victoria’s old signature Widow’s Peak and covers her for the three count.

Nikki Cross is your winner and STILL the Women’s World Champion. We are going to take you now to another word from our sponsors. Still to come tonight, the Cruiserweight and World Heavyweight Championships will both be on the line, but coming up next it’s another cruiserweight #1 contender’s tournament match right after this break.

Back from the break, Tony Nese and TJ Perkins make their entrances for this next contest.

Match #4 – Road to Starrcade Cruiserweight Tournament – TJ Perkins vs. Tony Nese

The two men square off as the match gets under way and Perkins ducks a Clothesline from Nese and hits him in the back of the head with an Enziguri. Perkins then whips a stunned Nese off into the ropes and connects with a Samoan Drop variation with Perkins doing a backflip, adding to the impact as he pops right back up to his feet on the other side and lands an Atomic Leg Drop. Perkins then heads up to the top turnbuckle as Nese stumbles back up and Perkins dives over him into a Blockbuster Neckbreaker. Perkins then drags Nese up and follows up with a Detonation Kick and covers him for the three count.

Perkins moves on to the next round and we’re not wasting any time as he makes his way to the back and Taya Valkyrie and Peyton Royce make their way out to the ring for this next contest.

Match #5 – Road to Starrcade Tournament – Taya Valkyrie vs. Peyton Royce

Taya and Peyton tie up as the match gets under way and Taya goes to a Wristlock and twists Peyton’s arm around behind her back and Peyton howls in pain. Peyton slowly fights over toward a corner, so Taya builds up speed and rams her chest first into the corner while keeping the Wristlock applied. Taya then turns Peyton around and marches her back to the center of the ring and they keep going over to the opposite corner and Taya rams Peyton chest first into the corner again and Peyton tries to grab the ropes, but Taya turns her back to the middle of the ring and they march back across to another corner, but this time as Taya tries to ram Peyton into the corner, Peyton drives her feet up into the middle turnbuckle and pushes off, falling over backward onto Taya, pinning her shoulders to the mat and picking up the three count.

Peyton has surprised even herself as she picks up the win and moves on to the next round. In the back we see the new cruiserweight champion Kyle O’Reilly making his final preparations. His first title defense is coming up next.

Back from the break, Nick Jackson, Teddy Hart and Kyle O’Reilly make their entrances for this Triple Threat match for the Cruiserweight Championship.

Match #6 – HWL Cruiserweight Championship – Triple Threat – Kyle O’Reilly vs. Teddy Hart vs. Nick Jackson

Teddy and Nick knock the champion for a loop right away with a Double Superkick and O’Reilly goes back through the ropes and out to the ring apron. Hart then springboards off the ropes and hits Jackson with an Asai Moonsault into a Reverse DDT and covers him for a near fall. Hart then heads up to the top turnbuckle and O’Reilly comes in and tries to cut him off, but Hart kicks him in the jaw and then connects with a Tornado DDT out of the corner, driving O’Reilly onto Jackson in the process. Hart then tries to cover O’Reilly, but only gets a near fall. He then covers Jackson, but again just a near fall. Hart then pulls both men up and calls for a Double DDT, but both Jackson and O’Reilly counter into an Atomic Drop. O’Reilly then bounces off the ropes and takes Hart down with a Spinning Heel Kick. Jackson then hits Hart with an Asai Moonsault and then O’Reilly drives Jackson back against the corner with a flurry of kicks. O’Reilly then whips Jackson across the ring into the corner and tries to follow him in, but Jackson pops back out of the corner and catches O’Reilly midair with a Superkick. Jackson then dives into the cover, but Hart makes the save. Hart then nails Jackson with a Shining Wizard and then locks in the Sharpshooter in the middle of the ring and Jackson may be on the verge of tapping out until O’Reilly breaks it up with a Running Bulldog. O’Reilly then hoists Jackson up and hits him with a Running Buckle Bomb. O’Reilly then tries to lock in the ARMageddon on Hart, but Hart rolls out of it and comes back up with a big Knee Strike on the jaw. Hart then follows up with a Spanish Fly and then the Stu Hart Special and goes for the pin, but has to roll out of the way as Jackson comes off the top rope with a Shooting Star Press and lands on O’Reilly. Hart then Powerbombs Jackson onto O’Reilly and O’Reilly rolls out to the floor as Hart heads up to the top rope and performs Open Hart Surgery on Jackson and covers him for the three count.

Teddy Hart is your winner and the NEW Cruiserweight Champion, upsetting Kyle O’Reilly in his first title defense. Hart makes his way to the back with the title held high as O’Reilly watches from the floor by the ring steps with a snarl. We are going to take one last commercial break and then it’s Main Event time.

Back from the break, Pete Dunne and Suicide make their entrances for this Main Event for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Match #7 – HWL World Heavyweight Championship – Suicide vs. Pete Dunne

Suicide and Dunne square off as the match gets under way and Suicide lands a flurry of kicks and then tries to whip Dunne off into the ropes, but Dunne blocks it and takes Suicide by the wrist and snaps his fingers backward. Dunne then whips Suicide into the corner and follows him in with a Flying Knee Smash and then a Running Bulldog out of the corner and makes the cover, but Suicide kicks out. Dunne puts the boots to Suicide and then drags him up and hoists him up into a Hesitation Suplex, holding the champion upside down for a while before delivering the Suplex. Dunne makes the cover, but again Suicide kicks out. Dunne tries to lock in an Armbar, but Suicide ties himself up in the ropes and retreats out to the floor. Dunne goes out after him as Suicide is trying to go under the ring, but Dunne catches him before he can and hurls him backward into the barricade.  Dunne then sets up for the Bitter End out on the floor, but Suicide fights him off with a series of Elbow Strikes to the side of the head and then hoists him up like for an Inverted Atomic Drop, but instead of dropping Dunne down on his knee, he drops him down crotch first astride the barricade.  Suicide then gets a running start and climbs up onto the barricade before charging Dunne and connecting with a Spinning Heel Kick on the run from the barricade, knocking Dunne over backward and sending him crashing back to the floor at ringside.  Suicide slowly drags Dunne back up and throws him back into the ring and then springboards off the top rope to connect with a Somersault Guillotine Leg Drop to the back of the neck. Suicide then makes the cover, but Dunne shoots his hand up and grabs the bottom rope. Suicide then drags Dunne to the middle of the ring and tries to lock in a Crossface Submission, but Dunne rolls through and catches Suicide by the hand and snaps his fingers again and then puts his hand down on the mat and stomps on it. Dunne then calls for the Bitter End, but on the way up, Suicide counters into an Armdrag Takedown and then follows up with a Facebreaker. Suicide then connects with a Package Piledriver and then then finishes the job with the Suicide Solution and covers Dunne for the three count.

Suicide is your winner and STILL the World Heavyweight Champion. Anything can happen between now and Starrcade, but it looks like the heavyweight title tournament winner might be our last chance to pry the title away from the invading Suicides before the end of the year. Join us next week for the heavyweight tournament semifinals and more. For now, we are signing off. Good night.
