HWL Overdrive Episode #6 (08/07/19)

Pyros light up the HWL Arena in St. Louis as we kick off this week’s episode of HWL Overdrive. Tonight, two championships are on the line as we approach Heatwave on Pay Per View, one week from Saturday. We’re not wasting any time tonight, getting right into it with the first of those championship matches as L.A.X. and the Tag Team Champion Goodbrothers make their way to the ring.

Match #1 – HWL Tag Team Championship – The Goodbrothers vs. L.A.X.

Karl Anderson starts off the match with Santana and quickly works in a Hammerlock. Santana fights him off with a couple of Elbow Strikes to the side of the head. Santana then whips Anderson into the corner and follows him in with a Flying Lariat. Santana then makes the tag to Ortiz and LAX connects with a  Double-team Suplex. Ortiz then bounces of the ropes and connects with a Warrior Splash, but Anderson kicks out. Ortiz then starts to pull Anderson back up to his feet, but Anderson counters with a flurry of Forearms to the gut and then a Jawkbreaker and follows that up with a Swinging Neckbreaker. Anderson makes the tag to Gallows and Gallows charges across the ring and knocks Santana off the ring apron, sending him flying into the barricade with a Running Forearm. Gallows then goes to put a Leg Drop on Ortiz, but Ortiz rolls out of the way and Gallows crashes to the mat. Ortiz follows up with a Dropkick and heads up to the top rope, but Anderson interferes from the ring apron and crotches Ortiz on the top turnbuckle. Gallows then climbs up to the middle turnbuckle and pummels Ortiz as Anderson dives off the ring apron and takes Santana down on the outside with a Diving Neckbreaker. Gallows launches Ortiz across the ring with a Ragdoll Slam from the middle turnbuckle. Anderson tags back in and The Goodbrothers finish Ortiz off with the Magic Killer for the three count and retain the titles.

Gallows and Anderson celebrate their victory as they head to the back and we take you back to our broadcast colleague who is standing by outside the trainer’s office where Sami Callihan and Dave and Jake Crist are going through HWL’s concussion protocols after all taking a chair shot to the head from Suicide last week. Jake is telling the others that he swears he felt somebody grab him from behind before Suicide hit him with the chair. Dave says he remembers the same thing. Sami calls them both morons and says there was only one masked idiot out there and if anybody grabbed the two unmasked idiots, they must have been grabbing each other. Sami says he’s had to listen to this conspiracy bullcrap all week and it needs to stop, now. Callihan then storms off and Dave and Jake start arguing about who was grabbed by whom in the dark last week as we take you to a word from out sponsors.

Re: HWL Overdrive Episode #6 (08/07/19)

Back from the break, cruiserweight action is coming up next as Drake Maverick and Rich Swann make their way to the ring.

Match #2 – Rich Swann vs. Drake Maverick

The two men square off as the match gets under way and Swann blocks a big right hand from Maverick and fires back with a series of jabs and then knocks Maverick flat with a Bionic Elbow to the skull. Swann then whips Maverick off into the ropes as he stumbles back up and knocks him down again with a Leaping Leg Lariat. Swann then heads up to the top turnbuckle as Maverick stumbles back up to his feet again and Swann goes for a Missile Dropkick, but Maverick blocks it and catches him by the feet, leading to Swann crashing on his back with his feet up in the air as Maverick rolls through into a pinning combination for a near fall. Maverick then connects with a Dropkick to the side of the head and then comes off the middle turnbuckle with a Knee Drop across the back of Swann’s neck as he was getting back up to his feet. Maverick goes for the cover again, but Swann kicks out. Maverick connects with a flurry of Forerarm Shivers and drags Swann back up to his feet and sets up for a Brainbuster, but Swann rotates out of it and lands on his feet behind Maverick and then drives Maverick down onto the back of his neck with a German Suplex. Swann now heads up to the top rope, but Maverick rolls out to the ring apron to try to avoid getting dived on. Instead, Swann jumps off and connects with a Double Footstomp onto the ring apron. Swann then rolls Maverick back into the ring and goes up to the top rope again and connects with the Phoenix Splash into the cover for the three count.

Swann picks up the victory as he makes his way to the back.  In the back, Dolph Ziggler is riled up over not having another opportunity after losing in the World Heavyweight Championship Tournament and the #1 Contender’s Battle Royal two weeks ago. Ziggler says Tomasso Ciampa dropped the ball at Inauguration and in Ciampa’s place, it should have been him. He says Adam Cole is probably going to shit the bed at Heatwave to, in a title match that should have been his. Ziggler says whoever is calling the shots this week needs to make sure they give him a match at Heatwave or he doesn’t see any reason to come back to this dump again. Ziggler then storms off and we cut to commercial break.

Re: HWL Overdrive Episode #6 (08/07/19)

Back from the break, our cameras follow Lacey Evans as she walks through the parking lot toward the arena, carrying the contract Dario Cueto presented her last week in one hand. Her answer to Cueto’s “Unique Opporunity” is due tonight. If she chooses to take the offered Women’s Championship match at Heatwave, she will have to risk literally the clothes on her back to get it. Evans heads into the arena and we take you back to ringside as The Miz and Kevin Owens make their entrances for this next contest.

Match #3 – Kevin Owens vs. The Miz

The two men square off as the match gets under way and Owens kicks Miz in the gut and catches him right away with the Stunner. Miz falls back against the ropes and stumbles back forward into a Pop-up Powerbomb. Owens then heads up to the top turnbuckle and connects with a Senton Bomb. Owens then heads up to the top rope again and follows up with a Moonsault and makes the cover for the three count.
Owens celebrates the quick victory as he heads to the back and Miz lies in the ring, looking up like he doesn’t know what hit him.

In the back, our broadcast colleague is standing by with Sting, flanked by the Authors of Pain. Sting says he hopes you all haven’t forgotten about him and his two newest pupils because they have big plans for this place. Sting says they have a lot to accomplish and while things did not start exactly as they wanted in the Tag Team Championship Tournament, they can be patient for now. However, he says they will not remain patient for long and so at Heatwave, Sting says that any wrestler or tag team in the back that wants to step up to them and get knocked down and if you want to get in their way, he has two bulldozers right here that specialize in removing them. Sting, Akam and Rezar then stalk off as we go to commercial break.

Re: HWL Overdrive Episode #6 (08/07/19)

Back from the break, Kyle O’Reilly of the Undisputed Era makes his way to the ring, as does Samoa Joe, as the two prepare to face off in this next contest.

Match #4 – Samoa Joe vs. Kyle O’Reilly

The two men square off as the match gets under way and Joe puts O’Reilly on the ropes with a flurry of jabs. Joe then tries to whip O’Reilly off into the ropes, but O’Reilly counters and pulls Joe into a Short-arm Elbow Strike and follows up with a Belly-to-Belly Suplex. O’Reilly then bounces off the ropes and goes for a Running Dropkick to the side of the head, but Joe dodges out of the way and O’Reilly crashes to the mat. Joe then connects with a Running Senton and tries to put O’Reilly in a Heel Hook, but O’Reilly fights him off with a flurry of kicks and knocks him back against the corner. O’Reilly pulls Joe into a Small Package, but Joe kicks out. Both men rush back up to their feet and Joe takes a wild swing, but O’Reilly ducks and connects with an Enziguri. O’Reilly then scrambles up to the middle turnbuckle and hooks Joe’s head as he looks for a Tornado DDT, but Joe blocks it and fires back with a series of Open-hand Chops across the chest. Joe then tries for the Muscle Buster, but now O’Reilly fights him off and hooks his legs around Joe’s head and tries to manipulate his arm into a Triangle Choke. Joe powers out of the corner with O’Reilly hanging down from his legs around Joe’s neck with Joe’s right arm trapped against his chest, but safely out of position for the Triangle. Joe then pivots and spins O’Reilly crashing head first into the middle turnbuckle and O’Reilly drops to the mat. Joe then hooks in the Conquita Clutch and O’Reilly frantically motions toward the back for help, but no help comes and Joe sinks the hold in as deep as he can and O’Reilly is forced to tap out.

Samoa Joe celebrates his victory as he stalks around the ring and O’Reilly slowly rolls out to the floor with a confused look on his face as to why Adam Cole and Bobby Fish didn’t come to his aid. The JumboTron suddenly turns to our cameras in the back that show Cole and Fish have been handcuffed together with their arms wrapped around a support beam in the locker room. Not far away, Suicide is dangling the keys to their handcuffs just out of reach as Cole and Fish try to kick at him. Suicide then shrugs and takes the keys over into the nearby bathroom area and flushes the keys down the toilet. Suicide then motions to the camera man with a finger to his lips as he sneaks out the locker room door in the hallway. Our camera man tries to follow, but as he goes out into the hallway, Suicide is nowhere to be seen. That bastard does not work here and here he has struck again. Back at ringside, we see O’Reilly rush toward the back to help his cohorts as we take you now to a word from our sponsors.

Re: HWL Overdrive Episode #6 (08/07/19)

Back from the break, our cameras have caught up with Lacey Evans again and our broadcast colleague wants to know Lacey’s answer. Lacey says she has gone back and forth over this decision all week and she still hasn’t committed herself one way or the other. Lacey says she plans to be there ringside for the Main Event as Nikki Cross defends against Jessica Havok and before the show goes off the air tonight, you’ll have her answer. Back at ringside, it’s time for our next contest as Elias and Bray Wyatt make their way to the ring.

Match #5 – Bray Wyatt vs. Elias

The two men circle each other as the match gets under way with Elias not sure what to make of his opposition. Elias then thinks he sees and opening and tries for a Running Axe-handle Smash, but Wyatt sidesteps and clubs him across the gut. Wyatt then follows up with an Upper Cut and Elias stumbles backward into the corner. Wyatt then charges in and connects with an Avalanche Splash. Wyatt then takes Elias over with a Snapmere into a seated position and then Wyatt then drops down behind him, reaching around to apply the Mandible Claw with one hand while wrapping his other arm around Elias’ throat. Elias scrambles to try to get free, but can’t break out of the hold. However, he is able to flop around enough to be able to stretch his foot out to the ropes and force a break. Wyatt clubs Elias over the back of the head as he complies with the referee’s order to break the hold. Wyatt then drags Elias back up to his feet by the hair in the middle of the ring. Wyatt then tries to apply the Mandible Claw again, but Elias grabs his wrist with both hands to block it and kicks Wyatt in the gut. Elias then connects with an Impaler DDT, but Wyatt immediately sits back up. Elias bounces off the ropes and connects with a Running Dropkick, but Wyatt again sits back up. Elias knocks him back down again with a Running Elbow Drop, this time landing on Wyatt and Wyatt again applies the Mandible Claw. Wyatt then slowly works his way back up to his feet, dragging Elias back up with him while keeping the Claw applied. Wyatt then violently Headbutts Elias and then releases the Mandible Claw and drives Elias into the mat with Sister Abigail and covers him for the three count.

Wyatt picks up the win here in his HWL debut and suddenly the lights flicker and Wyatt has disappeared when the lights come back on, but his laugh echoes over the speaker system. In the back, we see Sting and the Authors of Pain exiting he arena with their bags as they head toward their car when suddenly a bolt of lightning strikes the car, sending it up in flames. Behind the car is a flaming demonic T, the symbol of The Undertaker. It appears someone has stepped up to Sting’s challenge from earlier in the night and we are going to take you now to one final word from our sponsors. When we come back, the Women’s Championship will be on the line and we will get Lacey Evans’ answer.

Re: HWL Overdrive Episode #6 (08/07/19)

Back from the break, it’s Main Event time as Lacey Evans makes her way to the ring, contract in hand and takes a seat by the timekeeper’s table as Jessica Havok and Nikki Cross make their entrances.

Match #6 – HWL Women’s Championship – Nikki Cross vs. Jessica Havok

As the match gets under way, Cross rolls out to the floor and taunts Evans, wanting to know her answer, wanting to know if she wants to give us a peak. Evans makes a disgusted face in response and Havok capitalizes on the distraction as she goes out to the floor and flattens Cross with a Running Shoulder Block out on the floor. Havok then pulls Cross up by the hair and hoists her up into a Gorilla Press and throws her through the ropes and back into the ring. Havok then starts to climb back into the ring, but as she’s coming through the ropes, Nikki kicks her on the chin. Nikki then pulls Havok through the ropes, leaving her feet hanging on the middle rope, Randy Orton style as she delivers a DDT. Cross then dives into the cover, but Havok kicks out for a near fall with enough force to pitch Cross through the ropes and out to the ring apron. Cross then heads up to the top rope as Havok slowly pulls herself back up and Cross goes for a Flying Crossbody, but Havok catches her and drives her hip down across her knee before following up with a Ragdoll Slam. Havok then follows up with a Senton Leg Drop and makes the cover, but Cross shoots her shoulder out at the last second for a near fall. Havok pummels Cross across the jaw with a couple of Forearm Shots and then drags her back up to her feet and sets up for a Package Pildriver. Cross is able to fight out of it and goes for a Back Body Drop, but can’t lift Havok and instead drops to one knee, clutching her back. Havok now grabs Cross by the ears and pulls her back up to her feet and flings her overhead, Suplexing her by the ears and sending her crashing to the mat. Havok now drags Cross over to the corner and goes for a Swagger Bomb, but Cross rolls out of the way and Havok crashes to the mat. Cross follows up with a Running Dropkick and then heads up to the top turnbuckle as Havok stumbles back up and Cross hits a Guillotine Leg Drop across the back of Havok’s neck, driving her face first back down into the mat. Cross then dives into the cover and Havok puts her boot up on the bottom rope, but Evans shoves it off as the referee makes the three count and Cross retains the title.

Cross cackles at the result, but before she can even get up off of Havok, Evans strikes through the ropes, connecting with the Woman’s Right. Evans then rolls into the ring with her contract in hand as Havok groggily staggers up and points an accusing finger at Evans and Evans hits her with the Woman’s Right too, knocking Havok through the ropes where she drops limply to the ring apron and rolls to the floor. Evans then signs her contract and drops it down onto Nikki as she lays sprawled out in the ring. Lacey then adjusts her hat and her skirt before exiting the ring and walking toward the back with her head held high. The match for Heatwave is on. Thanks for joining us tonight as this episode of Overdrive comes to a close.
