HWL Overdrive Episode #17 (10/23/19)

Pyros light up the HWL Arena in St. Louis as we kick off this week’s edition of Overdrive. We know who all the challengers will be for the gold when we next come to you live on Pay Per View at Golden Ticket in November. But will the current set of champions still hold the gold when we get there? One champion is in jeopardy tonight as Roman Reigns puts the World Heavyweight Championship on the line against Bully Ray. We’re also on the road to Starrcade and all four divisions will have a #1 Contender for the last Pay Per View of the year crowned through four separate tournaments. The last chance at a Pay Per View title match in 2019 comes with these tournaments and we’re kicking things off with the first set of matches tonight and the very first one is coming up right now as Tomasso Ciampa and Dustin Rhodes make their way to the ring.

Match #1 – Road to Starrcade Heayvweight Tournament – Ciampa vs. Dustin Rhodes

The two men lock up as the match gets under way and Ciampa tries to back Rhodes into a corner, but Rhodes counters into a Drop Toe-hold. Rhodes then goes for a Crossface Submission, but Ciampa rolls through it into a pinning combination and Rhodes has to break it.  Rhodes then goes for a Running Knee Lift as both men reach their feet, but Ciampa sidesteps out of the way and hits Rhodes in the back with a Dropkick, knocking him sternum first into the corner.  Ciampa then rolls Dustin up for a near fall.  Ciampa boots Rhodes in the gut as he gets back to his feet and tries for an Impaler DDT, but Rhodes counters with a Back Body Drop.  Rhodes then follows up with a big Elbow Drop into the cover, but Ciampa quickly kicks out.  Rhodes puts the boots to Ciampa and drags him back up to his feet by the ears and then connects with a Facebreaker.  Rhodes then bounces off the ropes, but runs into a big Lariat from Ciampa, who then follows up with a Harley Race Knee Drop across the skull.  Ciampa heads up to the top turnbuckle as Rhodes climbs back up and Rhodes cuts him off with a series of punches to the side of the head.  Rhodes then climbs up after Ciampa and sets up for a Superplex, but Ciampa fires back with punches to the gut and then Sunset Flips over Rhodes into a Power Bomb from the top rope.  Ciampa then follows up with the Fairy-tale Ending and covers him for the three count.

Ciampa is moving on to the quarterfinals of the tournament. In the back we see the new World Heavyweight Champion, Roman Reigns, warming up in his dressing room. Reigns defeated both Sami Zayn and Dolph Ziggler in short order in a Triple Threat Match this past Saturday at Halloween Havoc, opting to put the title on the line right away and prove that it wasn’t a fluke. We will find out at the end of the night If Reigns is really a dominant champion or if he was just in the right place at the right time. For now, let’s take you to a word from our sponsors.

Back from the break, it’s time for our next tournament match and it’s another match in the Heavyweight Tournament as Brian Cage and Luke Gallows make their way to the ring.

Match #2 – Road to Starrcade Heavyweight Tournament – Brian Cage vs. Luke Gallows

Gallows tries to jump Cage from behind as the match gets under way, but Cage senses him coming and sidesteps, propelling Gallows into the corner.  Cage then levels the former tag team champion with a Discus Lariat and then follows up with the Drill Claw into the cover and picks up the three count.

Brian Cage advances and since that match was over with so quickly, we’re going to go ahead and bring you another match during this segment of the show before we take another commercial break. Next up is a tag team tournament match as OvE’s Dave and Jake Crist and the Young Bucks make their entrances.

Match #3 – Road to Starrcade Tag Team Tournament – Young Bucks vs. OvE

The two teams square off as the match gets under way and after some trash talking, the Bucks nail Dave with a Double Superkick.  Jake then springboards off the ropes and takes both Bucks down with an Asai Moonsault.  Jake then drags Matt Jackson out of the ring by the boot to the ring apron and takes him with a Leaping Powerbomb off the ring apron and drives his spine down onto the barricade. Nick then comes diving out and tackles Jake with a Suicide Dive. Dave then comes around and pummels Nick from behind and Nick is in an all-out brawl with both of the Crists. Nick shoves Dave away and then whips Jake into the ring steps and then climbs up onto the ring apron and Dave takes a steel chair and cracks Nick across the knee with it and Nick drops down to the floor and the referee starts calling for the bell, throwing this match out.

Security rushes out to pulls the Crists off of the Bucks and get them some medical attention and neither team will advance in this tournament. It’s time now for another word from our sponsors as the Bucks have to be helped to the back.

Back from the break, it’s the women’s turn as Kelly Klein and Madison Rayne make their entrances for this next Starrcade Tournament match.

Match #4 – Road to Starrcade Women’s Tournament – Kelly Klein vs. Madison Rayne

Klein and Rayne engage in a Greco-Roman Knuklelock as the match gets under way and Klein quickly overpowers Rayne and forces her hands down to the mat and stomps on her fingers. Klein then bounces off the ropes as Rayne gets back to her feet and Klein connects with a Running Knee Smash to the gut.  Klein then follows up with an Atomic Leg Drop and makes the cover, but Rayne kicks out for a near fall. Klein then pummels Rayne and drags her back up to her feet, but Rayne places her head under Klein’s jaw and counters into a Jawbreaker. Rayne then goes for a Swinging Neckbreaker, but Klein spins out of it and knocks her down with a Short-arm Clothesline, keeping control of her wrist as she pulls Rayne back up and hoists her up onto her shoulders and hits the K Power and makes the cover for the three count.

Klein picks up the victory and becomes the first woman to advance to the semifinals of the tournament. In the back, we see Samoa Joe and Hangman Page making their final preparations for this next match, our last tournament match of the night. Joe and the Hangman are up next after this commercial break.

Back from the break, Adam Page and Samoa Joe make their way to the ring for our next contest.

Match #5 – Road to Starrcade Heavyweight Tournament – Samoa Joe vs. Hangman Page

The two men square off as the match gets under way and Page sends Joe reeling with a flurry of punches. Page then whips Joe off into the ropes and goes for a Discus Lariat, but Joe ducks out of the way and bounces off the ropes on the other side and plows into Page with a Flying Enziguri.  Joe then follows up with a Running Senton into the cover, but Page kicks out for a near fall. Joe then pulls Page back up, but Page first back with a flurry of punches and shoves Joe away and connects with a Superkick and Joe falls backward into the corner.  Page then charges in and connects with a Flying Knee Smash in the corner and flips over Joe to land on his feet out on the ring apron and Joe stumbles back to the middle of the ring and Page flips in over the top rope and levels Joe with the Buckshot Lariat.  Page then follows up with the Deadeye and covers him for the three count.

Hangman Page knocks off the former World Heavyweight Champion and moves on to the quarterfinals of the tournament. That just leaves one more match to come tonight. In the back, Bully Ray and Roman Reigns are making their final preparations. The World titles is on the line next. We’ve got one final word from our sponsors and then it’s Main Event time. Stay with us.

Back from the break, Roman Reigns and Bully Ray make their entrances for our Main Event of the evening for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Match #6 – HWL World Heavyweight Championship – Roman Reigns vs. Bully Ray

The two men square off as the match gets under way and Reigns connects with the Superman Punch right out of the gate, but Bully rolls out under the bottom rope to the ring apron and Reigns can’t make the cover.  Reigns then rolls out to the floor and pulls Bully down off the ring apron and drives his back into the side of the ring.  Reigns then rolls Bully back in and slides back into the ring.  Reigns charges around the outside of the ring to the other side and rolls in as Bully stumbles back up and Reigns goes for the Spear, but Bully catches him with a Knee Lift to the jaw.  Bully then follows up with a Harley Race Knee, but to the back of Reigns’ head and neck and Reigns is dead weight as Bully rolls him over into the cover, and Reigns shoots his shoulder up at the last possible second to save the title. Bully pummels Reigns with some big right hands and then drags Reigns up by the hair and puts him up on his shoulder and drops him Snake Eyes style across the top turnbuckle in the corner.  Bully then waylays the champion with a Mafia Kick and makes the cover, but Reigns again kicks out for a near fall.  Bully pummels Reigns some more and drags him up by the hair again, but now Reigns fires back with a flurry of punches and then whips Bully off into the ropes and connects with a Samoan Drop.  Reigns then heads up to the top turnbuckle as Bully stumbles back up and Reigns connects with a Flying Shoudler Block from the top rope.  Reigns crouches in the corner and summons Bully to get his fat ass back up to his feet and Bully slowly drags himself back up as Reigns charges out of the corner and goes for a Spear, but Bully dodges out of the way , pulling the referee in his place and Reigns nails the referee. Bully then kicks Reigns through the uprights and follows up with a Bubba Bomb into a cover, but the referee is down. A second referee now comes running down and Bully covers Reigns again and hooks the leg as the referee comes sliding in, but Reigns kicks out for a near fall. Bully argues with the new referee and then goes back to Reigns and starts to pull him back up, but Reigns counters into a Small Package for a near fall. Both men get back to their feet and Reigns nails Bully with a huge Upper Cut and Bully drops through the ropes and out to the ring apron, but hangs on to the ropes to keep himself from crashing to the floor. Bully then regains his feet and Reigns connects with another Superman Punch, dropping Bully back down to the ring apron. Reigns catches Bully before he can flop down to the floor and pulls him back in under the bottom rope and makes the cover and gets the three count, but Bully’s leg got up on the bottom rope at the last second and the referee waves off the count.  Reigns is now celebrating retaining the title, but the referee is trying to tell him no, it didn’t count because Bully’s leg was on the rope. Reigns then goes back to Bully and tries to pull him up, but Bully shoves Reigns backward into the second referee, knocking the referee back through the ropes and out to the floor. Reigns tries to check on the referee, allowing Bully time to pull out a chain and wrap it around his fist. Reigns then turns around to where Bully is still down on one knee and Bully punches him in the nuts with the chain.  Bully then nails Reigns upside the head with the chain and tosses it the evidence out to the floor and covers Reigns as the original referee slowly rolls into position and makes the three count.

Bully Ray is your winner and the NEW World Heavyweight Champion. This is highway robbery as Bully Ray uses a foreign object to upset Roman Reigns in his first title defense, just four days after winning the title. We have our fourth World Heavyweight Champion in one week as Bully Ray steals the title away. What a horrible ending to a great night of wrestling, but we hope you won’t hold it against us. Join us again next week when we can hopefully get some justice for this travesty, but for tonight, we are signing off.
