HWL Overdrive Episode #16 (10/16/19)

Pyros light up the HWL Arena in St. Louis as we kick off this week’s edition of HWL Overdrive. Tonight, both the World Heavyweight Championship and Tag Team Championships are on the line. This is the last stop before Halloween Havoc and tonight will have heavy implications on the card for this Saturday.

We are kicking things off with Fatal 4-Way action tonight as MJF, Elias, Kazarian and Marty Scurll make their entrances for this contest.

Match #1 – Marty Scurll vs. Elias vs. Kazarian vs. MJF

The four men square off as the match gets under way and all three opponents team up on Elias and pummel him in the corner. Kazarian then elbows MJF in the face and he and Scurll together pitch MJF out over the top rope and send him crashing out to the floor.  Kazarian and Scurll then hit Elias with a Double Suplex and then Scurll bounces off the ropes into a Back Body Drop from Kazarian then sends Scurll crashing down across Elias. Kazarian then covers the drifter, but Scurll quickly breaks it up. MJF now pulls Scurll out by the boot to the floor and DDTs him.  MJF then rolls back in and Kazarian springboards off the ropes and flies at MJF for a Flying Crossbody, but MJF counters into a Double-knee Gutbuster.  Elias then kicks MJF in the gut and goes for the Drift Away, but MJF spins out and rolls Elias up for a near fall. MJF then sets up for a Piledriver, but Elias tackles him backward into the corner. Elias then drives his shoulder into MJF’s gut and then moves out of the way as Scurll reaches in and trips MJF up from the floor and pulls him crotch first into the ring post. Scurll then comes in off the top rope and drops a Double Footstomp into MJF’s back. Elias then sidesteps Scurll and sends him crashing head first into Kazarian. Elias then hurls Scurll through the ropes in the corner, sending him crashing head first into the ring post directly one rope above MJF.  Elias then puts the boots to Kazarian and turns his back to the corner with MJF and Scurll as he drags Kazarian up by the ear and knees him in the gut. Elias then hits the Drift Away on Kazarian, but while he has been doing all this, MJF has crawled back out from under the bottom rope in the corner where he was crotched on the ring post and rolled up an unconscious Scurll for the three count before Elias could get the cover on Kazarian.

MJF slowly rolls out to the floor and celebrates his victory as Elias can’t believe it and makes his case to the referee, but there is nothing that can be done for it as MJF pinned his man first. In the back, our broadcast colleague is standing by with the #1 Contender for the Cruiserweight Championship, Pete Dunne, who says that Austin Aries and TJ Perkins have played the numbers game to their advantage all summer long and it’s paid dividends for them, but they weren’t careful to play that strategy sparingly enough and because they’ve become too predictable, he’s managed to negotiate a slight alteration to their championship match on Saturday. For that match, he says that TJP will be allowed at ringside, but he’s going to be locked in a cage outside the ring where he can be safely tucked away and have no impact on the outcome of the match. Dunne says that Aries likes to call himself the Greatest Man Who Ever Lived and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but on Saturday, he’s going to find out definitively that he’s only the second greatest cruiserweight on the roster. Now, a word from our sponsors.

Back from the commercial break, it’s time for our first championship match of the night as the B Team and Suicide & Suicide make their entrances for this Tag Team Championship match.

Match #2 – HWL Tag Team Championship – Suicide & Suicide vs. The B Team

The first of the two Suicides and Curtis Axel start off the match and Suicide draws Axel’s attention to something up in the lights. With Axel and Dallas both looking up in the lights trying to figure out what is going on, Suicide rolls up Axel and gets the three count.

The Suicides retain in quick fashion as they head to the back with the titles in tow, leaving the B Team confused and still trying to figure out what Suicide was pointing at. The Suicides then exit the other way as OvE and the Undisputed Era charge down to the ring after them and both Suicides escape through the crowd and OvE and the Undisputed Era instead beat the holy crap out of the B Team, taking out their frustration. Now, OvE and the Era get into a shoving match with each other and the referee looks to maintain order as we cut to commercial break.

Back from the break, the referee has restored order and Adam Cole and Sami Callihan have begun a one-on-one match with Dave & Jake Crist and Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish

Match #3 – Adam Cole vs. Sami Callihan

Cole has Callihan down on one knee in a Side Headlock as we join this match in progress. Callihan battles his way back up and hits Cole with a flurry of Elbow Strikes to the mid-section. Callihan then shoves Cole off into the ropes and knocks him flat with a Shoulder Block. Callihan then bounces off the ropes and goes for a Running Senton, but Cole drives both knees up in his back. Cole then rolls Callihan up in a Crucifix pinning combination for a near fall.  Cole then springboards off the ropes as Callihan staggers back up and Cole goes into a Sunset Flip, but Callihan squats down to prevent from being rolled over and then drops to his knees, pinning Cole to the mat, but Cole kicks out for a near fall.  Callihan then pummels Cole with some stiff right hands and drags him up by the arm. Callihan tries to whip Cole off into the ropes, but Cole counters and sends Callihan into the ropes and drops his head for a Back Body Drop, but Callihan stops short and connects with a Facebreaker.  Fish now jumps up onto the ring apron and Callihan hurls Cole head first into Fish and the two bang their heads together, knocking Fish down to the floor and now the Crists double team O’Reilly and drive him back, halfway up the rampway. Back in the ring, Callihan connects with a Package Piledriver on Cole and covers him for the three count.

Callihan picks up the win and celebrates with the Crists as they make their way to the back, leaving Cole, Fish and O’Reilly all three sprawled out on the ground in and around the ring as we take you to another word from our sponsors.

Back from the break, it’s time to determine who will face the Suicides for the tag team titles on Saturday as the Goodbrothers and the Young Bucks make their way to the ring.

Match #4 – Tag Team #1 Contender’s Match – The Goodbrothers vs. The Young Bucks

Matt Jackson starts the match off with Luke Gallows and Jackson tries to draw Gallows’ attention up to the rafters, but Gallows shakes his head and says that’s not going to work on him.  Matt shrugs and says it was worth a shot and instead Superkicks Gallows square on the jaw.  Matt dives into the cover, but Gallows quickly kicks out. Matt then puts the boots to Gallows and makes the tag to Nick and the Bucks connect with simultaneous Dropkicks to both sides of Gallows’ head. Nick then makes the cover, but Gallows again kicks out with authority.  Nick then bounces off the ropes as Gallows pulls himself back up and this time Nick runs right into a Big Boot.  Gallows then follows up with an Atomic Leg Drop and goes for the cover, but Nick kicks out.  Gallows then pummels Nick and drags him over to his corner where he makes the tag to Anderson.  Gallows then connects with a Sidewalk Slam and Anderson comes off the middle turnbuckle, driving a knee down across Nick’s head and rolling through back up to his feet.  Anderson then follows up with a Powerbomb on Nick down across his own knees in a Backbreaker combination and then goes for the cover, but Matt comes diving in to break it up. Gallows charges in at Matt, but Matt hits him with a Dropkick to the knee and then follows up with a Hurricanranna that drives Gallows face first into the mat and the big man rolls out to the floor. The Bucks then hit Anderson with a Double Superkick and follow up with More Bang For Your Buck and Nick covers Anderson for the three count and picks up the win.

The Young Bucks have earned the right to challenge the Suicides for the HWL Tag Team Championship this Saturday at Halloween Havoc, having outlasted five other teams over the last two weeks to receive that title shot. Can they be the ones to finally solve the riddle of these two masked intruders? In the back, World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk and the challenger, Sami Zayn, are headed to the ring. The title is on the line next in our Main Event next, after this final word from our sponsors.

Back from the break, Sami Zayn and CM Punk make their entrances and it’s Main Event time. We’re not going anywhere until we have a winner in this match.

Match #5 – HWL World Heavyweight Championship – CM Punk vs. Sami Zayn

The two men come toe-to-toe in the middle of the ring as we get things under way and Punk smacks Zayn across the face. Zayn comes back and sends Punk reeling with a flurry of big right hands and then Clotheslines the champion out over the top rope and to the floor. Punk slowly gets back up to his feet and climbs back into the ring, but as he’s coming through the ropes, Zayn nails him with a Running Knee Smash to the side of the head. Zayn then whips Punk into the corner and follows hi in with the Helluva Kick.  Zayn then frantically pitches Punk down to the mat and dives into the cover and gets the thre… no, Punk kicks out at the last possible second and saves the title. Zayn is dumbstruck after coming half a heartbeat away from capturing the title. Zayn then tries to pull Punk back up, but Punk catches him in a Triangle Choke. Punk looks to choke out his challenger and Zayn is fading fast, but as he passes out and flops over, one leg goes out under the bottom rope and hangs out of the ring, which is good enough to force a rope break.  Punk has to break the hold, but he drags Zayn back to the middle of the ring and struggles to lift Zayn’s dead weight up to his feet. He eventually gets Zayn up and then hoists him onto his shoulders and goes for the GTS, but Zayn blocks it on the way down and catches Punk by the knee and takes the champion down with a Dragon Screw. Zayn keeps ahold of Punk’s leg and drags him to the ropes as he slides out to the floor and slams Punk’s knee into the ring post. Zayn then quickly rolls back in and takes that same leg as he pulls Punk away from the ropes and dives over Punk, delivering a snapmere to the leg that can ruin your hamstring and your ACL. Zayn then puts Punk in a Knee Bar in the middle of the ring and the champion howls in pain and struggles to pull himself back toward the ropes. Punk is finger tips away, but now Zayn breaks the hold to pull Punk back to the middle of the ring.  Zayn tries to put the Knee Bar back on, but Punk counters into an Inside Cradle and gets a near fall. Punk hobbles back up to his feet and ducks a Lariat from Zayn and connects with a Roundhouse Kick to the side of the head. Punk then hoists Zayn up onto his shoulders and connects with the GTS, but with the pain in his knee, he didn’t quite get all of it and he can’t go for the cover right away. Punk finally flops onto Zayn for the cover and gets the thre… NO, now Zayn kicks out at the last second. Punk is furious with the referee’s count and he backs the official into the corner, careful not to put his hands on the referee while giving him an earful. While he is berating the referee, he’s able to reach around the officials back and untie the top turnbuckle pad and drop it out to the floor. The referee has now had enough and pushes Punk back so he can escape the corner and Zayn has pulled himself up to his hands and knees behind Punk and the referee backing up the champion causes Punk to trip over Zayn and fall over on the back of his head and neck. Zayn then stacks Punk up into a pinning combination, but Punk kicks out for a near fall. The two men stagger back up and Zayn hits Punk with an Inverted Atomic Drop.  Zayn then bounces off the ropes and runs right into a Superkick from Punk and falls back against the ropes and stumbles into the corner. Punk then shakes his ailing knee and charges across the ring and goes for a Flying Knee Smash on Zayn in the corner, but Zayn moves out of the way and Punk drives his own knee into the exposed steel of the turnbuckle in the same corner where he pulled the pad off. Punk struggles to hold himself up on one leg in the corner as he howls in pain and Zayn charges across the ring and drills him with another Helluva Kick and lets Punk limply drop to the mat as Zayn falls onto him in the cover and picks up the three count.

Sami Zayn has shocked the world and is the NEW World Heavyweight Champion, completely upsetting the title match for Halloween Havoc as he will now defend the belt on Saturday against two of the men he teamed with last month in War Games to earn this title match, Roman Reigns and Dolph Ziggler. Zayn sits on his knees in the middle of the ring with tears falling from his eyes as he collects the World Heavyweight Championship from the referee. Zayn celebrates his victory in the ring as a dejected Punk hobbles to the back and looks on with disdain. Thanks for joining us tonight for this shocking episode of Overdrive as we crown a new World Heavyweight Champion. Join us again on Saturday for Halloween Havoc, but for now we are signing off. Good night.
