HWL Overdrive Episode #15 (10/09/19)

Pyros light up the HWL Arena in St. Louis as we welcome you to another episode of HWL Overdrive. Tonight, we have two championship matches in the offing and we’ll also take a step closer to seeing who will try to reclaim the Tag Team Titles for HWL from the invading Suicides and we will know for sure who will challenge for the Cruiserweight Championship in an Over the Top Rope Battle Royal

We kick things off as TJ Perkins, Pac, Enzo, Pete Dunne, Cameron Grimes, Jack Gallagher, Rick Swann and Tony Nese have made their way to the ring with a trip to Halloween Havoc on the line.

Match #1 – Cruiserweight Battle Royal

Chaos ensues as the match gets under way and Pac has not forgotten about the last time he was in the ring with Enzo Amore and immediately boots him in the nuts and pitches Enzo out over the top rope and Enzo crashes Taka Michinoku style, face first into the floor. Pac is enjoying watching Enzo crash and burn too much and doesn’t turn his attention back to the rest of the competitors in time and TJP hits him in the back with a Dropkick and Pac is sent out over the top rope and to the floor for the elimination. Across the ring, Cameron Grimes and Jack Gallagher have batted each other up to the top rope and Dunne takes Swann by the back of the head and propels him up over the top turnbuckle in that corner, sending him crashing into Grimes and Gallagher, knocking them both off their perch and sending them crashing to the floor, but Swann hangs on with his waist laying across the turnbuckle and his head hanging out by the side of the ring post. On the other side of the ring, Nese has taken TJP down into Head Scissors. Dunne faces away from the turnbuckle as he hooks Swann by the legs and pulls him off the turnbuckle and into an Alabama Slam. TJP then battles his way back up to his feet with Nese hanging from him and trying to apply a Triangle Choke. Dunne then nails TJP with an Enziguri and both Nese and Perkins crash to the mat. Swann then staggers back up to his feet across the ring over near the ropes and Dunne charges across the ring and Clotheslines him out over the top rope and out to the floor. Nese pulls Perkins up and sets up for a Powerbomb, but Perkins counters with a Back Body Drop, launching Nese out over the top rope and to the floor, leaving just Perkins and Dunne as the two men left standing. The two men trade punches back and forth and Perkins connects with a Facebreaker and then bounces off the ropes and hits a Swinging Neckbreaker.  TJP then goes up to the top turnbuckle and tries for a Flying Guillotine Leg Drop, but Dunne rolls out of the way and Perkins crashes to the mat. Dunne then bounces off the ropes and connects with a Running Knee Smash to the face. He then grabs a hand and snaps Perkins’ fingers in opposite directions. Dunne then pulls Perkins up and sets up for the Bitter End, but suddenly Austin Aries has arrived at ringside and jumped up on the ring apron, distracting Dunne. Dunne goes over and has words with Aries and Perkins is able to recover and come up behind Dunne. Perkins takes Dunne by the tights and tries to toss him out over the top, but Dunne reverses it and sends Perkins crashing into Aries, knocking the champion out to the floor. Dunne then Clotheslines Perkins out over the top after him for the final elimination.

Pete Dunne is the #1 Contender and will challenge for the Cruiswerweight Championship at Halloween Havoc on Oct. 19. Somehow, Aries and Perkins are going to have to regroup because Aries will have to defend that title later on tonight against Drake Maverick, a man who has already taken it from him once. In the back, our broadcast colleague is standing by with Maverick now. Maverick says that right there, Perkins sent crashing into Aries, was a fine example of karma and if Perkins shows his face during his Cruiserweight Championship match later tonight, it will be more of the same. Eventually, what goes around comes around, and Aries and Perkins reign over this division is at its end. Maverick then stalks off and we take you to a word from our sponsors.

Back from the break, we’re going to find out who one of the teams will be in next week’s Tag Team #1 Contender’s match as The Hardys, the Young Bucks and the Authors of Pain make their entrances for this Triple Threat qualifier.

Match #2 – Tag Team #1 Contender’s Qualifier – The Hardys vs. Young Bucks vs. Authors of Pain

In HWL triple threat tag team rules, instead of one team being completely out of the match while the two other teams have a legal man in the match, all three teams have a legal member in the match at one time and can only tag to their own tag team partner. Rezar starts for AoP while Matt Hardy and Matt Jackson start for the two brother-brother teams. Rezar immediately knocks both of his opponents down with a Running Double Shoulder Block.  Rezar then drags Matt Hardy back up and hoists him up into a Goilla Press as Matt Jackson staggers back up and Rezar sends Hardy crashing into Jackson, landing in a pinning situation, which Rezar quickly breaks up.  Rezar then pulls Hardy up by the back of his pants and propels him through the ropes and shoulder first into the ring post. Rezar then drags Matt Jackson up by his hair, but Jackson fires back with a flurry of punches to the mid-section.  Jackson then bounces off the ropes and Nick Jackson makes a blind tag as Matt bounces back and ducks a Big Boot from Rezar. Rezar spins back around after Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson springboards in off the top rope and hits Rezar in the back of the head with a Missile Dropkick at the same time Matt comes back with a Superkick.  Matt Hardy then takes Matt Jackson by the tights and pitches him out over the top rope and sends him crashing out to the floor.  Matt Hardy then tags Jeff in and the Hardys, Matt in the ring and Jeff on the ring apron, send Nick Jackson flipping through the air and crashing to the mat with a Double Clothesline. Rezar then smashes Matt Hardy in the face with his Elbow and pitches him out to the floor as Jeff Hardy heads up to the top turnbuckle and Rezar turns into a Whisper in the Wind from Jeff. Jeff then makes the cover, but Akam comes in to break it up. AoP then pummel both Jeff and Nick and then set up for the Colling Powerbombs, but Nick counters into a Hurricanranna, launching Akam through the ropes and out to the floor. Rezar then Powerbombs Jeff on his own. Matt Jackson comes back in and the Bucks nail Rezar with a Double Superkick, but the big man stays on his feet. The Bucks nail another Double Superkick, and this time Rezar only goes down to one knee.  He stumbles back up to his feet and Matt Hardy comes in from behind and nails Rezar with the Twist of Fate and the big man rolls out to the floor.  The Jacksons then Double Superkick both Hardys and Matt falls down in the corner and the Bucks finish Jeff off with the Meltzer Driver into the cover for the three count.

The Young Bucks are headed to the #1 Contender’s Match next week where they will face the winner of our other Triple Threat tag match tonight. In the back, our broadcast colleague is standing by with the Women’s World Champion, Bayley. Bayley says she could be eliminating a Halloween Havoc challenger tonight by defending the Women’s World Championship against either Becky Lynch, Shayna Baszler or Toni Storm, but she didn’t win this title to do things the easy way. Instead, she’s going to save them for later, possibly all at once, and she’s going to face three entirely random challengers tonight in a Fatal 4-Way. Bayley says to prove you are the best takes extreme measures and despite what you may think, this hugger is as tough as they come. We take you now to another word from our sponsors.

Back from the break, it’s title match time as Drake Maverick and Austin Aries make their entrances for this Cruiserweight Championship match.

Match #3 – HWL Cruiserweight Championship – Austin Aries vs. Drake Maverick

The two men square off as the match gets under way and Aries puts Maverick on his heels with a series of big right hands. Aries then plays to the crowd and now Maverick fires back with a flurry of punches of his own, driving Aries back against the ropes. Maverick then nails Aries with a Backbreaker and goes fro the cover, but Aries kicks out.  Maverick starts to pull Aries back up to his feet, but Aries chops him in the throat.  Aries then follows up with a Brainbuster and makes the cover, but Maverick kicks out for a near fall.  Aries then puts the boots to Maverick and pulls him back up, but Maverick counters into a Small Package and nearly takes back the title in an upset, but Aries kicks out at two. Aries reaches his feet first and nails Maverick in the side of the head with a Dropkick.  Aries then sets up for another Brainbuster, but Maverick fights him off into a Stunner. Maverick dives into the cover, but only gets a near fall. Maverick then heads up to the top rope and connects with a Diving Elbow Drop. He then goes over to the corner and starts calling for a Superkick, but as Aries stumbles back up to his feet and Maverick goes for it, Aries pulls the referee in between them and Maverick pulls up short of kicking the referee, but the two accidentally butt heads, knocking the referee down and out. Aries then rolls Maverick up, but Maverick rolls through back up to his feet and hits Aries with a Knee Smash to the face. Perkins now comes running out and grabs the Cruiserweight title and dives into the ring. He swings it wildly, but Maverick ducks out of the way and kicks Perkins in the gut and connects with an Impaler DDT. Maverick then takes the title and prepares to smash Aries in the face with it, but a groggy referee gets in the way and tries to take the title away from him. Maverick wrestles the title away from the referee and swings it at Aries, but Perkins shoves Aries out of the way and Maverick clocks Perkins in the side of the head with the title, putting him down and out. Aries then kicks Maverick in the gut and connects with the Brainbuster and then follows up with the Last Chancery and Maverick is forced to tap out.

Aries is your winner and STILL the Cruiserweight Champion. He quickly goes over to check on Perkins and helps his buddy to the back. Backstage, our broadcast colleague is standing by with CM Punk, who says management wanted him to come on tonight and announce when his next title defense was going to be, but Punk says that’s not how this is going to work. Punk says he holds all the cards and Roman Reigns, Sami Zayn and Dolph Ziggler are going to have to play the waiting game. They’re going to have to keep playing the guessing game for another few days until the very last minute when he’s required to notify management and none of them are going to know a minute sooner. Punk says he’s smartly taking every advantage he can get and preparing weeks in advance for his next defense while the challenger will have a mere half a week to know for sure if any of their numbers are up this coming Wednesday or not. “Have fun twiddling your thumbs and waiting, boys,” he says as he exits the interview area and we take another commercial break.

Back from the break, the Undisputed Era’s Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish, the Goodbrothers and the B Team make their entrances for our second of two tag team #1 Contender qualifying matches.

Match #4 – Tag Team #1 Contender’s Qualifier – Undisputed Era vs. The Goodbrothers vs. The B Team

Bo Dallas, O’Reilly and Karl Anderson start off for their respective teams and O’Reilly goes after both opponents with a flurry of kicks to the hips and knees. O’Reilly then bounces off the ropes and runs into a Spinning Heel Kick from Anderson. Dallas then grabs Anderson and goes for a Running Bulldog, but Anderson slips free and sends Dallas crashing to the mat on his tailbone and then lands a stiff kick between the shoulder blades.  Anderson then makes the tag to Gallows and Gallows charges in and plows over top of Dallas with a Running Big Boot. O’Reilly quickly breaks up a cover with a punt to Gallows’ chin.  O’Reilly then tries to lock in a Guillotine Choke, but Gallows powers out of it, hoisting O’Reilly up onto his shoulders and then drives him down onto Dallas with a Death Valley Driver. Gallows then waffles Curtis Axel with a big right hand on the ring apron for good measure, and Axel drops to the ring apron and rolls down to the floor.  Fish comes in illegally and jumps on Gallows’ back. Anderson comes in to try to pull Fish off, but O’Reilly knocks him down with a Leg Sweep to the shin. O’Reilly then cracks Gallows with a Roundhouse Kick to the side of the head and then a Knee Smash to the face.  O’Reilly then nails Anderson with a Thrust Kick to the gut and the Undisputed Era goes for a High/Lo Combination attack on Anderson, but Gallows interrupts it with a Discus Clothesline to Fish and Anderson ducks O’Reilly’s kick on the other side.  The Goodbrothers  then hit O’Reilly with a Magic Killer and both member of Undisputed Era roll out to the floor as the Goodbrothers then nail Dallas with another Magic Killer and cover him for the three count.

The Goodbrothers advance to face the Young Bucks in the #1 Contender’s Match next week. The winner of that match will get a tag team title match at Halloween Havoc. In the back, we see our contenders for the Women’s World Championship, Billie Kaye, Paige and Tenille Dashwood all heading for the ring. They’ll meet Bayley coming up next in our Main Event after this, our final commercial break of the night.

Back from the break, Tennille Dashwood, Paige, Billie Kaye and Bayley all make their entrances for this Fatal 4-Way championship match.

Match #5 – HWL Women’s World Championship – Bayley vs. Billie Kaye vs. Paige vs. Tenille Dashwood

Bayley goes after everybody as the match gets under way, throwing Forearm Shivers at everybody. Bayley then hits the Bayley-to-Belly on Dashwood and makes the cover, but Paige and Kaye both break it up. Paige and Kaye both put the boots to Bayley and then slam the champion with a Double Suplex. Kaye then rolls Paige up in a Schoolgirl and nearly steals a three count, but can only get a near fall. Paige then knocks Kaye flat with a Headbutt to the chest.  Bayley then takes Paige and throws her through the ropes in the corner, sending her crashing head first into the ring post. Now Dashwood hits Bayley in the back with a Dropkick, knocking her through the ropes and out to the floor. Dashwood then hits Kaye with a Running Dropkick to the side of the head and then sets up for a Vertical Suplex, but Kaye blocks it and shoves Dashwood off into the ropes and Elbows her in the face as she bounces back.  Kaye then bounces off the ropes and follows up with a Leaping Elbow Drop to the chest and covers Dashwood for a near fall. Kaye then pulls Paige out of the corner into a Swinging Neckbreaker and makes the cover, but Bayley comes back in to break it up. Bayley then whips Kaye off into the ropes and follows her in with a Flying Lariat. Bayley then goes back across the ring and Clotheslines Paige out over the top rope and out to the floor.  Dashwood then tackles Bayley into the corner and flails away at her, but Bayley is able to overpower Dashwood and knock her loopy with a big Elbow Smash to the side of the head. Bayley then follows up with a Belly-to-Bayley in the middle of the ring, but then Kaye grabs her by the tights and pitches her out to the floor and steals the cover. The referee makes the count, but as he’s coming down for the three, Bayley pulls Kaye out of the ring by the boot and breaks up the cover. Bayley then hurls Kaye into the ring steps head and shoulder first and then climbs up onto the ring apron and springboards back into the ring to drop a Diving Elbow Drop on Dashwood and covers her for the three count.

Bayley turns back the challenge of three women as she is the winner and STILL Women’s World Champion.  Tune in again next week to see if Punk defends the World Heavyweight Championship and against who, and also what Bayley is going to do about her remaining challengers from War Games. Will she face one next week? Will she face three new opponents? Will she rest up for Halloween Havoc? Next week is the last stop before the Pay Per View. We’ll see you then, but for now, we are signing off.
