HWL Overdrive Episode #11 (09/11/19)

Pyros light up the HWL Arena in St. Louis as we kick off this week’s edition of Overdrive. Tonight, two titles are on the line as Samoa Joe defends the World Heavyweight Championship against Brian Cage and Drake Maverick defends the Cruiserweight Championship in a Fatal 4-Way Match. Dario Cueto also promises another of his “Unique Opportuntities” will be offered here tonight. But to start things off we have a colossal 6-Man Tag Team match and that’s coming your way right now as Roman Reigns, Braun Strowman, Jon Moxley, Bully Ray, Drew McIntyre and Brock Lesnar make their entrances for this opening contest.

Match #1 – Roman Reigns, Braun Strowman & Jon Moxley vs. Brock Lesnar, Drew McIntyre and Bully Ray

All six men start out in the ring as this match breaks down from the get go with Moxley and Strowman taking Lesnar out over the top rope with a Double Clothesline. Bully Ray Mafia Kicks Moxley in the side of the head, knocking him through the ropes and out to the floor. Reigns then nails Bully with a Superman Punch, knocking Bully out to the floor as Stroman and McIntyre tie up in the corner. Strowman then tries to Hip Toss McIntyre across the ring, but McIntyre blocks it and connects with a Facebreaker. McIntyre then bounces off the ropes and goes for the Claymore Kick, but he is cut off by a Spear from Reigns. Strowman then rolls out to the floor and charges around the ring, flattening first Lesnar and then Bully with Running Shoulder Blocks. Strowman then hoists Moxley up in a Gorilla Press as Lesnar and Bully Ray both stagger back up to their feet and Strowman hurls his own tag team partner into them, bowling them both over out on the floor. Back in the ring, McIntyre struggles back up to his feet just in time to eat a Superman Punch from Reigns who makes the cover and picks up the three count.

Reigns, Strowman and Moxley pick up the victory. In the back, our broadcast colleague is standing by with the #1 Contender to the World Heavyweight Championship, CM Punk, who will challenge the winner of tonight’s title match between Samoa Joe and Brian Cage on Pay Per View September 21 when HWL presents Fall Brawl. Punk says in this match tonight, you have a ruthless, conniving savage champion against an overly muscled, nickle-brained brute of a challenger. Punk says he’s dealt with his share of guys with a million-dollar brain and a ten-cent mind and he’s not in the least worried about stepping in the ring with Cage if it comes to that. However, Punk says he and Joe have gone to war personally many times in the past. Punk says as ruthless and cunning as Joe is, Punk is just that much more. Punk says you would have to get up pretty early to slip one past him and whether it’s tonight or a week from Saturday at Fall Brawl, Joe’s Nation of Violence will prove to be very short lived. Punk stalks away and we cut to commercial break.

Re: HWL Overdrive Episode #11 (09/11/19)

Back from the break, Pete Dunne, Tony Nese, Cameron Grimes and the Cruiswerweight Champion Drake Maverick make their entrances for our first title match of the night.

Match #2 – HWL Cruiserweight Championship – Fatal 4-Way Match – Drake Maverick vs. Pete Dunne vs. Tony Nese vs. Cameron Grimes

The four men get right into it and Dunne takes Maverick down into the mount position and connects with a flurry of Forearm Shivers as Grimes ducks a Double Axe-handle from Nese and nails him with a Thrust Kick to the gut. Grimes then hooks Nese by the tights and chucks him through between the middle and top rope in the corner, slamming his shoulder into the ring post. Grimes then dives over Dunne, grabbing him by the head on the way down in a take on Charlotte’s Natural Selection, in the process driving Dunne and Maverick’s heads together. Grimes then drags Maverick to the middle of the ring and goes for a Powerbomb, but Maverick counters into a Hurricanranna, landing on top of Grimes and reaching back to hook the leg, but Grimes kicks out for a near fall. Dunne nails Maverick with a European Upper Cut and then goes for the Bitter End, but Maverick counters into a Tornado DDT and Dunne rolls out to the floor. Maverick then connects with a Superkick on Grimes and makes the cover, but Nese dives over and breaks it up. Nese puts the boots to Maverick and deliver a Tilt-A-Whirl Backbreaker.  Nese then ducks a Roundhouse Kick from Grimes and hits him with a Reverse DDT into a Backbreaker and follows up with a Rolling Cutter.  Nese then heads up to the top turnbuckle and takes flight out to the floor, wiping out Dunne with a Flying Crossbody.  Nese then quickly climbs up to the ring apron and Springboards back into the ring off the top rope, Somersaulting through the air into a Harlem Hangover style leg drop to the back of Maverick’s neck as he stumbles back up to his feet over near Grimes in the center of the ring and as Nese takes Maverick down, he drives the champion down onto Grimes, taking the air out of both men. Nese then takes Maverick up in a Razor’s Edge position and tosses him out over the top ropes where he crashes into Dunne, wiping both men out on the floor. Nese then comes off the top turnbuckle with a 450 Splash onto Grimes and makes the cover for the three count.

Tony Nese is your winner and the NEW Cruiserweight Champion. In the back, our broadcast colleague is standing by with the former Cruiserweight Champion Austin Aries. Aries says that by virtue of his pinfall victory over Drake Maverick in last week’s tag team match, he was granted a shot at the Cruiserweight Championship at Fall Brawl. Aries says he was hoping to take the title back from Maverick himself and show the world how his winning the title in the first place was a fluke, but it looks like Tony Nese has already taken care of that. Now, he says he’s going to go see about this “Unique Opportunity” that Dario Cueto is promising and after that, all that’s left is to go to Fall Brawl prove that he never should have lost the title in the first place because he is the very best cruiserweight walking the Earth, he’s the greatest man that ever lived and most of all, he’s God’s gift to wrestling. Aries heads toward the ring and we take you to a word from our sponsors.

Re: HWL Overdrive Episode #11 (09/11/19)

Back from the break, the ring has filled up with the Authors of Pain, Austin Aries, TJ Perkins, Sting, OvE and Sami Callihan, the Undisputed Era, R-Truth and the Goodbrothers. Now, Dario Cueto makes his way out onto the rampway and says that all of these men are going to compete in a battle royal with the winner receiving one of his “Unique Opportunities.” Cueto says that all of these men have something in common, they’ve all had run-ins with the masked vigilante running around backstage, Suicide, who doesn’t even have a contract to work here in the HWL. So, Cueto says the HWL has had enough of this guy running around hitting signed wrestlers with chairs, trying to steal championship belts and who knows what else. As such, he says this match tonight is designed to give them all an opportunity to get their hands on Suicide because he’s invited him here to be a part of this match tonight and one way or another, this “Unique Opportunity” will give the winner the chance to end this whole mess. The lights in the arena then go out and when they come back on, Suicide is perched on the top turnbuckle and the bell sounds to begin this Battle Royal.

Match #3 – “Unique Opportunity” Battle Royal

Suicide takes flight into the mass of wrestlers standing in the middle of the ring, taking everybody down except R-Truth. Suicide then quickly tosses Jake Crist out over the top rope for an elimination and then does the same to Dave Crist shortly thereafter. Truth then claps Suicide on the back and says he’s got this and heads up to the top turnbuckle and dives out to the floor, taking both Crist brothers out on the floor, eliminating himself in the process. All three members of the Undisputed Era then bumrush Suicide and tackle him. TJP and Aries pile on as well, but in the melee, none of them can seem to do much damage. Meanwhile, Akam, Rezar and Sting clean house by eliminating Sami Callihan and The Goodbrothers, leaving the three of them, the three members of Undisputed Era, TJP and Aries and Suicide as the only men remaining in the match. Akam and Rezar then start pulling bodies off of Suicide and TJP pokes Akam in the eye. Rezar then charges TJP, but TJP ducks and pulls down the top rope and Rezar charges out over the top rope and topples to the floor where he is eliminated.  Aries then tackles Sting back into the corner and delivers a series of Shoulder Thrusts to the gut. TJP dukes it out with Cole now as Fish and O’Reilly toss Suicide out over the top ropes, but Suicide hangs on and skins the cat back into the ring and catches Fish from behind with Leg Scissors around the neck as Fish was trying to celebrate the elimination with his tag partner. Suicide then leverages Fish out over the top rope and dumps him out to the floor with his legs to score the elimination while landing on the ring apron. O’Reilly now charges over and Suicide rams his shoulder through the ropes into O’Reilly’s gut and then Back Body Drops him out over the top rope and to the floor for the elimination and Suicide climbs fully back into the ring. He then charges across to where Akam has grabbed Aries by the neck from behind and hoisted him up into a Gorilla Press and Suicide nails Akam in the back with a Dropkick, causing him to drop Aries out over the top rope to the floor for the elimination and the impact also drives Akam out over the top rope and he crashes to the floor, leaving just Sting, Suicide, Cole and Perkins. Cole nails Perkins with the Last Shot and Perkins rolls out under the bottom rope and out to the floor.  Cole then goes for a Superkick on Suicide, but Suicide ducks and Cole nails Sting instead, knocking him out over the top rope and out to the floor and Cole and Suicide are the last men standing in the ring. Suicide ducks a Running Lariat from Cole and connects with a Switchblade Takedown. Suicide then heads up to the top turnbuckle and connects with a Guillotine Leg Drop. Suicide then drags Cole back to his feet and dumps him out over the top rope, but Cole hangs on and grabs Suicide by the top of the mask and starts trying to pull it off. Perkins now rolls back to the ring and dumps Suicide out over the top rope from behind, knocking Cole’s grip of Suicide’s mask off in the process and knocking Cole to the floor for the elimination.  Perkins then springboards off the middle rope and tries to nail Suicide with a Missile Dropkick, but Suicide ducks out of the way and Perkins crashes to the mat. Suicide then slips back into the ring and nails Perkins with a Running Dropkick. Suicide then lets Perkins stumble back up to his feet over near the ropes and Suicide tries to Clothesline him out over the top rope, but Perkins catches him with an Elbow Smash to the face. Perkins then hoists Suicide up for the Detonation Kick, but Suicide hooks the ropes to block it and pulls both himself and Perkins out over the top rope where they crash to the ring apron. As both men try to regroup, Perkins suddenly charges Suicide, who is close to the ring post and Suicide jumps up over Perkins, who runs headlong into the ring post and crashes out to the floor for the final elimination.,

Suicide is your winner and will now receive a “Unique Opportunity” from Dario Cueto, who is clearly displeased by this outcome as he watches from the rampway. Cueto says if that’s the way it’s going to be, then so be it, but every opportunity comes with a price. Cueto says since Suicide likes to try to steal the Tag Team Titles, at Fall Brawl he can try to actually try to earn them. Cueto says that Suicide and a partner of his choosing will challenge the Undisputed Era for the Tag Team Championships at the Pay Per View on Saturday 21, but if they do not win the titles, Suicide will lose his mask and we will finally find out who he is. Cueto then stalks off up the rampway and we take our final commercial break of the night. When we come back, it will be the Main Event for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Re: HWL Overdrive Episode #11 (09/11/19)

Back from the break, it’s the opportunity Brian Cage has been waiting for as he goes one-on-one with Samoa Joe for the World Heavyweight Championship. The challenger and champion both make their entrances and it’s Main Even time.

Match #4 – HWL World Heavyweight Championship – Samoa Joe vs. Brian Cage

Cage and Joe circle each other warily as we get under way and then tie up in the middle of the ring. Cage works his way into a Hammerlock, but Joe elbows him in the side of the head. Joe then bounces off the ropes and charges at Cage, but Cage knocks him flat on his back with a “This is Sparta” kick to the chest. Cage then follows up with a Running Warrior Splash and makes the cover, but Joe kicks out. Cage then pummels Joe and starts to pull the champion back up to his feet, but Joe fires back with a flurry of punches to the mid-section. Joe then tries to whip Cage off into the ropes, but Cage is going nowhere and instead whips Joe into the ropes and charges in with an Avalanche Splash in the corner. Cage then follows up with a Sidewalk Slam and makes the cover, but Joe again kicks out. Cage puts the boots to Joe and then drags him back up to his feet and sets up for a Powerbomb in the middle of the ring, but Joe is able to shift his weight and prevent himself from being lifted. Cage then clubs Joe across the back a couple of times and then hoists him up into position for the Powerbomb, but he goes up awkwardly and Cage stumbles forward to the ropes and both men crash out over the top rope and out to the floor. Joe is the first one to reach his feet and he nails Cage with a Knee Lift to the jaw.  Joe then rolls Cage up onto the ring apron and climbs up and connects with a Running Senton onto the hardest part of the ring, driving all the air out of Cage. Joe then heads up to the top turnbuckle as Cage rolls into the ring and slowly starts to gets back to his feet. Joe then takes flight at Cage, but Cage catches him mid-air into a huge Double-A Spinebuster. Cage quickly rolls into the cover and hooks the leg, but Joe kicks out at the last possible second and we were within an eyelash of having a new World Heavyweight Champion. Cage signals that he’s going to end it now and he drags Joe back up to his feet and sets up for the Drill Claw, but Joe slips free down Cage’s back and lands on his feet, pulling Cage back with him into the Coquina Clutch, but Cage is quickly able to grab the ropes and force a break. Both men battle back up to their feet, trading heavy right hands to the side of each other’s heads.  Cage then goes for a Discus Clothesline, but Joe ducks out of the way and connects with an Enziguri to the back of the head.  Joe then props Cage up in a seated position on the top turnbuckle and tries to set up for the Muscle Buster, but Cage powers out of it and boots Joe in the chest, sending him rolling back across the ring.  Joe then charges back in and Cage kicks him in the side of the head and then connects with a Tornado DDT out of the corner.  Cage then heads up to the top turnbuckle and takes flight for a Shooting Star Press, but Joe rolls out of the way and Cage crashes to the mat at an awkward angle. Cage stumbles back up to his feet and Joe takes advantage of the dazed machine with a roll-up and picks up the three count.

Samoa Joe is your winner and STILL the World Heavyweight Champion. He will go on to defend the championship against CM Punk at Fall Brawl. Joe takes the title in his fist and sticks his head out through the ropes and shoves the title in front of the lens while getting up close and telling Punk that his turn is coming up at Fall Brawl when the camera suddenly jerks around and there is a loud pop and the camera crashes to the floor. We then switch to another video feed and see that Joe is down in the ring, bleeding from a cut on his scalp after being hit with the camera by the cameraman. The camera guy then slowly pulls back his hood to reveal that it’s CM Punk. Punk smiles as he cockily makes his way to the back, motioning for Joe to Go to Sleep. Thanks for joining us tonight. We’ll see you again next week, but for now we are signing off.
