Pyros light up the HWL Arena in St. Louis as we kick off tonight’s episode of Overdrive. Tonight, we have two title matches for you and we will have a Triple Threat tag match with the winners getting a shot at The Goodbrothers on next week’s show. First up, we are kicking things off with singles action as Mark Briscoe and The Miz make their way to the ring.
Match #1 – The Miz vs. Mark Briscoe
The two men square off as the match gets under way and Briscoe suddenly becomes entranced with something up in the rafters. Miz comes over to see what he’s looking at, but can’t spot it and Briscoe nails him with a big right hand as we figure out the whole was a ruse. Briscoe then bounces off the ropes as Miz picks himself up off the mat and Briscoe connects with a Running Knee Lift to the face. Briscoe then follows up with a Double-underhook Spike DDT and then heads up to the top turnbuckle and takes flight into a Froggy ‘Bow and covers Miz for the three count.
Mark Briscoe picks up the win and makes his way to the back. As Miz begins to regain his senses in the ring, Elias comes out on stage, strumming his guitar. Elias sings about how Miz is crap and has been handily beaten in quick fashion in both of his HWL appearances. However, Elias sings about how he is the greatest acquisition the HWL has ever had and tonight, he’s going to slay a giant. Elias continues singing as we cut to commercial break.
We return from the break with Elias still signing to raucous boos from the crowd, which now erupts as Braun Strowman makes his way to the ring.
Match #2 – Elias vs. Braun Strowman
Strowman makes a beeline for Elias as the match gets under way. Elias takes a wild swing with his guitar, but Strowman steps out of the way and goozles Elias and picks him up into a Chokeslam. Strowman now takes the guitar as Elias slowly gets back up to one knee and Strowman brings the guitar crashing down over his head, leading to a disqualification.
Strowman, not done there, now drags Elias out to the floor and puts him through the German announce table with a Running Powerslam before finally making his way to the back. Backstage, our broadcast colleague is standing by with Bayley, the No. 1 contender for the Women’s World Championship at Fall Brawl. Bayley says she will be keeping a close eye on the Main Event tonight, a Fatal 4-Way title defense by Nikki Cross. Bayley says whatever happens, she wants to face the best possible champion at Fall Brawl, that way when she takes that belt, there will be no doubt who the best female wrestler in HWL and the world is. Bayley then walks off as we cut to commercial break.
Back from the break, R-Truth has made his way to the ringside area and has joined the Spanish announce team, who seem very confused by his presence as he’s supposed to be competing in our next match. Jon Moxley makes his way to the ring and storms around trying to figure out what is going on. Moxley goes over and pounds on the Spanish announce table and tells Truth to get in the ring, to which Truth replies “Nein, danka,” which only serves to confuse people more. Moxley launches himself over the table at Truth, tackling him out of his chair and pummeling him out on the floor. Moxley then climbs back into the ring and Truth slowly gets back up to his feet and dusts himself off and sits back down at the announce table, determined to do what he perceives he’s supposed to be doing out there tonight. Moxley now goes back out after Truth and grabs a handful of dreads and drags Truth out of his chair and throws him in the ring. Moxley then climbs in and the bell finally sounds to get this match under way.
Match #3 – Jon Moxley vs. R-Truth
Moxley lunges at Truth, but Truth ducks out of the way into the splits, apparently pulling a hamstring in the process as he’s unable to get back up. Moxley then knees him in the face and drives him into the mat and covers him for the three count.
Moxley picks up the win in his HWL debut and makes his way to the back, shaking his head after that vexing encounter and we take you to a word from our sponsors.
Back from the break, the Forgotten Sons’ Wesley Blake and Steve Cutler, Undisputed Era’s Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish and the Authors of Pain make their entrances for this next contest with the winners advancing to challenge The Goodbrothers for the Tag Team Championships next week.
Match #4 – Tag Team Triple Threat #1 Contender’s Match – The Forgotten Sons vs. The Undisputed Era vs. The Authors of Pain
Under HWL Triple Threat tag team match rules, all three teams have an eligible competitor in the match and need to tag in and out to their own partner rather only having two legal men and one entire team sitting out. Fish, Blake and Rezar start off for their respective teams. Fish goes to the middle of the ring and flips both guys the bird and then ducks out of the way as they both charge across the ring and Rezar nearly takes Blake’s head off with a huge Lariat. Fish then hits Rezar in the back with a Dropkick, knocking him through the ropes and out to the floor. Akam now charges in, but Fish drops down and pulls down the bottom rope and Akam charges right out over the rope and crashes out to the floor. Fish then makes the tag to O’Reilly and Cutler tries to come in but gets taken out by a Flying Knee Strike from O’Reilly. Fish and O’Reilly then nail Blake with a High/Low Attack and O’Reilly locks Blake in the ARMageddon Jujigatame and Blake is forced to tap out.
The Undisputed Era are moving on into a Tag Team Championship match next week against The Goodbrothers. Up in the rafters, we see Suicide watching calmly over the proceedings. Suicide waves at Fish & O’Reilly and makes a motion that he’s keeping an eye on them, which only serves to tick them off. In the back, we see Gallows and Anderson watching on a monitor. The two give out a disgusted “Nerds!” before stalking off as we take you to a commercial break.
Back from the break, it’s time for our first title match of the night as the Cruiserweight Champion Austin Aries, Drake Maverick and Mary Scurll make their entrances for this Triple Threat Match.
Match #5 – HWL Cruiserweight Championship – Triple Threat Match – Austin Aries vs. Drake Maverick vs. Marty Scurll
The three men square off as the match gets under way and Maverick and Scurlll both shoot in on Aries and grab a leg and trip the champion over onto his back. They then argue with each other over which one’s going to work him over as they both hold one of his legs up in the air. They then both decide to do it and each snap a leg to the side in opposite directions as they drive their body weight into it down to the mat, resulting in an unpleasant maneuver for Aries’ groin. Aries rolls out to the floor and now Scurll knees Maverick in the mid-section. Scurll then sets up for the Chicken Wing Submission, but Maverick shoves off the ropes backward into a pinning combination, but Scurll is able to kick out. Maverick lands a kick to the side of Scurll’s head as he tries to get back up and then Maverick pulls him up into position for a Piledriver, but Scurll Back Body Drops him out over the top rope and Maverick lands out on the ring apron and bounces to the floor. Aries rolls back in and pins Scurll with a schoolboy, but Scrull kicks out. Aries kicks Scurll in the side of the head as he tries to get back to his feet and then sets up for a Brainbuster, but Scurll counters on the way up and comes down on his feet behind Aries. Scurll tries for the Chicken Wing, but Aries counters by driving his head backward into Scurll’s face. Aries follows up with an Enziguri and then a Brainbuster and makes the cover, but Maverick comes springboarding off the top rope with a Flying Elbow Drop to the back of Aries’ head. Maverick shoves Aries out of the way and covers Scurll as the referee makes the three count.
Maverick is shocked as he is declared the winner and NEW Cruiserweight Champion. Maverick grabs the title and does a victory lap before starting to head to the back where he is cut off by TJ Perkins. Perkins gets in Maverick’s face and gives him a shove and Maverick crashes onto his back and now R-Truth comes charging down the ramp with an HWL referee, not a licensed WWE official, and blasts Perkins in the back of the head with a Running Forearm and dives into the cover on Maverick as the referee makes the three count. Truth then snatches up the Cruiserweight Championship, takes a real close look at it, and then asks it if it lost weight, because it sure looks different. Then he decides that it’s less green, that it must have been sick all along and now it’s lost so much weight, but now it must be feeling better because it’s not green any more. Aries then comes up behind Truth and spins him around and demands he hand over the title. Truth responds with a kick through the uprights and Aries drops to the ramp, clutching his groin. Truth then takes off running with Perkins in pursuit, followed by Maverick who is complaining that it doesn’t work that way, Truth, and begging him to stop and give it back and with that we cut to commercial break.
Back from the break, AJ Styles and Tomasso Ciampa make their entrances for this next contest.
Match #6 – AJ Styles vs. Tomasso Ciampa
The two men square off as the match gets under way and Ciampa lands a kick to the gut and whips Styles into the corner. Ciampa charges in after him, but Styles drives both boots up into his face. Styles then follows up with a Pele Kick and a Flying Forearm Smash. Styles then tries for the Styles Clash, but Ciampa fights him off with a series of punches to the lower back and tackles Styles backward into the corner. Ciampa tries for a Short-arm Clothesline, but Styles goes with the momentum backward, up and around in a backflip to land back on his feet, DDTing Ciampa into the middle turnbuckle. Styles then sets up for the Styles Clash again and this time he hits it and turns Ciampa over into the cover for the three count.
Styles picks up a big win in convincing fashion over the former World Championship contender and we are going to take you to one final word from our sponsors. When we come back, the Women’s World Championship is on the line.
Back from the break, Toni Storm, Kylie Rae, Shayna Baszler and Nikki Cross make their entrances for this Main Event, a Fatal 4-Way Match for the Women’s World Championship. Before the match gets under way, Bayley’s music hits and the #1 Contender comes out on the rampway with a steel chair and promptly unfolds it and takes a seat at the top of the ramp to watch the match.
Match #7 – HWL Women’s World Championship – Fatal 4-Way Match – Nikki Cross vs. Toni Storm vs. Kylie Rae vs. Shayna Baszler
The four women tie-up as the match gets under way with Storm matching up with Baszler and Kylie taking on the champion. Storm quickly dispatches Baszler through the ropes and out to the floor and comes up behind Cross for a roll-up, but Kylie quickly breaks it up. Kylie nails Storm with a Running Dropkick, but then Nikki gets Kylie from behind and connects with a German Suplex. Baszler comes back in with a Running Knee to the gut, flipping Cross over to land on her back. Storm then comes diving off the middle turnbuckle and catches Baszler with a Flying Tornado DDT. Kylie then goes for a Codebreaker on Storm, but Storm blocks it, catching Kylie around the legs and turning her over into a Boston Crab. Storm sits down on the hold as Kylie tries to pull herself to the ropes and Cross comes from behind Storm to connect with a Running Bulldog. Cross makes the cover, but Storm quickly kicks out. Cross hooks Storm around the neck and starts to pull her back up to her feet, but Kylie uses her head as a Battering Ram to drive into Cross’ chest and bowl her over and Cross rolls out to the ring apron. Baszler then catches Kylie from behind in a Rear Naked Choke, but Storm breaks it up by Spearing them both. Storm covers Baszler, but she kicks out for a near fall. Storm then covers Kylie, but she kicks out as well. Cross now comes back in and takes Storm by the tights and chucks her through the ropes in the corner, driving Storm’s shoulder into the ring post and Storm drops out to the floor. Baszler and Kylie then both stagger back up to their feet and Cross knocks their heads together. Baszler reels back from the impact and falls out through the ropes and crashes out to the floor. Cross hooks Kylie around the neck and finishes her off with the Fisherman’s Neckbreaker and makes the cover for the three count.
Cross celebrates another successful title defense as she continues to keep a firm grip on the HWL Women’s division and Cross and Bayley lock eyes from the ring to the top of the ramp and Nikki drapes the title over the top rope while yelling at Bayley, asking if she wants to come and play and we go off the air.
