Overdrive Episode #56 (09/23/20)

Pyros light up the arena as we kick off tonight's episode of Overdrive and we open with the news that Finn Balor is unable to compete tonight due to an injury suffered in last week's melee, but we're told he will be able to go this Saturday at Fall Brawl in the War Games match.

We'd love to open with some in ring action, but we can't as we open the show with JBL and the MAGA Powers in the ring gloating over putting Finn Balor out of action. As such, JBL proclaims victory in tonight's Steel Cage Match and says his team will have the secondary advantage in the four-team War Games match and since everybody knows Johnny Gargano isn't going to be able to wrestle for the next decade after the topple he took off that ladder last week, that means Evolution is already one man short and so the secondary advantage is really the primary advantage. JBL says we might as well call this whole thing off and name them the War Games winners already. However, he is interrupted by Alex Shelley, who says he came here alone tonight on behalf of the nWo, because if all of them were here the MAGA Powers wouldn't make it to War Games. But Shelley says that just because Finn can't be here tonight, that doesn't mean the match is off... because Shelley is going to take his place. Furthermore, Shelley snaps his fingers and HWL security begins making their way to the ring, as Shelley informs JBL that everybody else from the MAGA Powers is being taken out of the arena right now and there will be nobody to help JBL tonight. JBL storms around the ring in a rage as the rest of the MAGA Powers are all escorted to the back and on out of the arena. JBL is going to have to skeddadle from the ring himself now as Alexa Bliss makes her way to the ring for our first match of the night. Bliss blows JBL an ironic kiss as she revels in his frustration. Marina Shafir makes her way to the ring to take on Bliss and we're ready to get under way.

Match #1 - Alexa Bliss vs. Marina Shafir

The two women square off as the match gets under way and they tie up as Shafir overpowers Bliss and backs her into the corner, but Bliss swiftly turns the tables and slaps Shafir across the face. Shafir swings back wildly, but Bliss ducks out of the way and connects with a Lung Blower. Bliss then does a cartwheel into a Double Knee Drop across Shafir's chest, driving out whatever air she still hand in her after that Lung Blower. Bliss then heads to the top and connects with Twisted Bliss to finish this one off as she scores the three count.

Bliss makes her way to the back and with that, we need to take our first commercial break of the night.

Re: Overdrive Episode #56 (09/23/20)

Back from the break, our cameras catch up with the Television Champion, MJF, backstage as he's talking on the phone. We hear MJF as the other party if they're sure they're going to be able to make it to War Games Saturday, and so we understand he must be talking to Johnny Gargano. MJF says the Evolution guys are counting on him and he staked his reputation on being able to deliver, so MJF says the party on the other end of the phone had better not let him down. Suitably relieved by what he hears on the other end of the line, MJF thanks them and hangs up. He then notices the camera and tells our crew to get lost.

Back at ringside, it's time for our next match as Titus O'Neill and Rush make their way to the ring.

Match #2 - Rush vs. Titus O'Neill

Rush flips his hair and poses for the crowd, paying no attention to Titus as the match gets under way. Titus takes exception and spins Rush around and connects with a big right hand. Titus then whips Rush into the corner and follows him in, but runs into a Big Boot to the face. Rush then follows up with a Running Bulldog and then rolls out to the floor, dragging Titus out with him. Rush whips Titus into the guard rail and then follows after him with a Running Knee Smash to the face, knocking Titus over the barricade. Rush climbs out after Titus and pummels him with a series of clubbing blows. Rush then lifts Titus up for a Running Powerslam, but instead of driving him to the mat, drives his lower back down across the top of the barricade. Titus slowly and painfully drops back to the ringside area as Rush lays across the top of the barricade and raises one fist in the air, his signature pose. Rush then climbs down and drags Titus to the ring and tosses him back in. Rush rolls back in and puts the boots to Titus and Titus crawls to the corner where he sits up and leans back against the bottom turnbuckle, but cannot raise himself up any higher. Rush then gets a running start and charges into the corner to deliver the Bull's Horns. Rush then drags Titus away from the ropes and covers him for the three count.

Rush is your winner and as he makes his way to the back, he makes sure to let us know that No Pasa Nada. Nothing happens... unless he says. With that, we need to take you now to another quick word from our sponsors. Still to come tonight, it's a Steel Cage Match between JBL and Alex Shelley. But first, the Television Title is on the line as former champion Heath Slater looks to regain the gold. He'll challenge MJF right after this break.

Back from the break, it's title match time as Heath Slater and MJF make their way to the ring for this Television Title match.

Match #3 - HWL Television Championship - MJF vs. Heath Slater

The match gets under way and Heath tries to pull his trick of getting his opponent to look up at the lights, but MJF doesn't go for it and instead kicks Heath in the knee. MJF then follows up with a Hammerlock DDT, putting Heath down hard on the crown of his head. MJF then slaps on the Salt of the Earth Fujiwara Arm Bar and Heath is forced to submit.

Just like that, MJF retains the gold. The cocky S.O.B. snatches the title away from the referee and orders him not to touch him. MJF then relents and lets the referee raise his arm in victory, but then quickly shoves him away, hogging the spotlight all to himself. The champion makes his way to the back and in the back we see Shayna Baszler berating Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir for their losses on Overdrive the last two weeks. She says they have a six-woman tag at all Brawl and Duke and Shafir had better not let her down again, or there will be noticeable consequences. With that, we are quickly going to take one last commercial break. When we come back, it's Main Event time and our last glimpse is of the steel cage being lowered into place.

Back from the break, it's Main Event time as Alex Shelley and JBL make their way to the ring and are locked inside the steel cage.

Match #4 - Steel Cage Match - JBL vs. Alex Shelley

JBL tries to sideswipe Shelley with a Big Boot to the side of the head before the bell rings, but Shelley dodges out of the way and now the bell sounds as Shelley presses JBL chest first into the corner and punishes him with a flurry of Forearm Shots and kicks to the lower back. Shelley then connects with a Neckbreaker and makes a quick cover, but JBL kicks out for a near fall. Shelley puts the boots to JBL and then tries to drag him back up, but JBL pokes him in the eye. JBL then follows up with a Powerbomb. JBL slowly drags Shelley up now by the hair and propels him over the top rope and headlong into the steel cage. JBL then takes Shelley by the back of the head again and takes him across the ring and propels him over the ropes and face first into the side of the cage again. He does this a third time and then a fourth. The fifth time, Shelley comes away bloody and JBL coats his hand with Shelley's blood before he slaps him across the chest with a wet thwap, leaving a bloody handprint. JBL then bounces off the ropes and connects with the Clothesline from Hell and Shelley is down for the count. JBL then casually steps through the ropes and asks for the cage door to be opened and he steps through it and makes his way to the floor to pick up the win.

JBL celebrates his victory, but the celebration is short-lived as Brock Lesnar's music hits and maybe Shelley didn't come alone as he said he did. The big nWo enforcer starts making his way to the ring and JBL retreats into the cage and frantically works to padlock it shut before Lesnar can get to the ring. Lesnar climbs the stairs and grabs ahold of the padlock and with two quick pulls, rips it forcibly back open and it's a good thing JBL is wearing dark pants as Lesnar swings the door open and climbs into the ring. JBL tries to climb the cage to get free, but Lesnar catches him by the leg. Lesnar pulls JBL down from the side of the cage onto his shoulders and connects with the F-5. However, before Lesnar can do much else, he is swarmed by the four members of the Attitude Era, each wielding a steel chair, who have entered the cage in Lesnar's wake. They swing away and Lesnar tries to fight them off, but after frequent chair shots goes down to one knee. Cole then delivers the Last Shot knee to the back of Lesnar's head. Attitude Era stands tall in the ring, but that's not our last view of the night. Instead, we cut to Ric Flair's skybox where he's joined by John Cena and MJF. The three of them watch the proceedings without reaction. Cena, MJF and Johnny Gargano have the first man to enter advantage in each progressive round of the War Games match this Saturday. Thanks for joining us tonight, but it's time to wrap up the show. Join us again on Saturday.
